Gold medallist earlier in the day, winning the Mixed Doubles title in partnership with colleague, Sharon Alguetti, Crystal Wang of the United States emerged the one surprise name to reserve a semi-final place in the Girls’ Singles event at the 2018 Pan American Junior Championships in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic on Saturday 15th July.

Furthermore, she surrendered just one game en route to her last four reservation; it was a most imposing performance from the 16 year old.

The no.14 seed, after recording an opening round victory against Chile’s Natalie Ramos, the no.24 seed (11-2, 11-6, 11-3, 11-4); Crystal Wang accounted for Brazil’s Livia Lima, the no.4 seed (11-2, 11-8, 11-2, 11-5), prior to reserving her place in the semi-final round courtesy of success in opposition to Canada’s Ivy Liao, the no.10 seed (12-14, 11-8, 11-4, 11-6, 12-10).

Otherwise, in the Girls’ Singles event, it was progress as status advised. Emulating colleague, Crystal Wang, Amy Wang, the top seed recorded a quarter-final success against Canada’s Isabelle Xiong, the no.8 seed (11-5, 8-11, 11-6, 11-8, 11-4).

Impressive from the North Americans, it was the same from the Latin Americans in the guise of Puerto Rico’s Adriana Diaz and Brazil’s Bruna Takahashi. Safely through to the quarter-final round, they halted the advance of the United States. Adriana Diaz, the no.2 seed, beat Rachel Sung, the no.6 seed (11-8, 11-7, 14-12, 11-2); similarly, Bruna Takahashi, the no.3 seed, overcame Rachel Yang, the no.28 seed (11-5, 11-3, 11-8, 11-8).

Notably, one round earlier, Rachel Yang had caused somewhat of an upset by overcoming Guatemala’s Lucia Cordero, the no.5 seed (11-9, 11-7, 11-4, 8-11, 11-4).

At the semi-final stage Amy Wang meets Bruna Takahashi, Crystal Wang opposes Adriana Diaz; play in Santo Domingo concludes on Sunday 15th July.
