A top two finish the goal in order to gain a place in the main draw, the leading eight seeds not required to compete in the initial phase; the principal names required to participate in the qualification stage of the Boys’ Singles event at the Pan America Junior Championships in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, enjoyed success on Friday 13th July.

First places were secured in some style by the Argentine duo of Leandro Fuentes and Alexis Orencel; likewise for Nikhil Kumar of the United States and Chile’s Andres Martinez, the next two names on the order of merit, it was first position.

However, there were surprise names that ended the day in pole position; Peru’s Adolfo Cucho, Canada’s Alexander Bu and Argentina’s Francisco Matias alongside Brazil Enzo Nakashima somewhat upset the odds.

All beat the highest rated player in their respective groups. Alexander Bu accounted Uruguay’s Pablo Palou (11-8, 11-1, 11-7), Francisco Mattias overcame Costa Rica’s Daniel Araya (11-3, 11-7, 11-9), whilst Enzo Nakashima prevailed against Puerto Rico’s Angel Naranjo (8-11, 11-1, 3-11, 11-6, 11-6).

Defeat for prominent names but their only defeats; second place and progress to the main draw was secured.

However, for Chile’s Jorge Paredes, the leading name in his group, it was third place and elimination. He was beaten by both Adolfo Cucho (8-11, 11-7, 12-10, 12-10) and by the Dominican Republic’s Pedro Cabrera (11-9, 9-11, 12-10, 11-5); in the concluding match in the group Adolfo Cucho duly overcame Pedro Cabrera (11-8, 11-6, 11-5) to reserve first place.

Surprise top places; in the remaining groups it was as predicted. The Dominican Republic’s Mariano Lockward secured first place in his group as did the Canadian duo of Edward Ly and Terence Yeung.

Play in the Junior Boys’ Singles event progresses on Saturday 14th July; at the end of the day, the names of the quarter-finalists will be known.
