First place in the initial phase group secured in the Cadet Girls’ Singles event at the 2018 China Junior and Cadet Open in Taicang for the host nation’s Chen Yi, the top seed, meant a place in the quarter-finals; on Saturday 7th July, decision day, it was achieved without raising a racket in anger.

The future for the 13 year was in the balance as the day began; she needed a little help. The help came from Japan’s Miwa Harimoto.

Impressively Miwa Harimoto beat Chinese Taipei’s Liu Ru-Yun in four games (11-7, 9-11, 11-3, 13-11) but in the opening match in the group had lost to Chen Yi in three straight games (11-4, 11-8, 11-3). Later, Chen Yi had experienced a somewhat surprise four games reverse at the hands of Liu Ru-Yun (11-9, 3-11, 11-3, 11-6).

Thus games ratio determined the outcome; it was first place for Chen Yi (4:3) followed by Liu Ru-Yun (4:4) and Miwa Harimoto (3:4). A place in the main draw for Liu Ru-Yun but the progress was short-lived; she experienced an opening round defeat at the hands of Hong Kong’s Phoebe Hui Wai, the no.6 seed (11-8, 13-11, 11-9).

Similar to Chen Yi, it was a direct entry for colleague Kuai Man, the no.2 seed, who the previous day had secured first place in her group; for the remaining qualifiers, as with Liu Ru-Yun, a first round encounter was required.

Both Chen Yi and Kuai Man were names expected to appear in the last eight but there were those of stature who fell by the wayside. Hong Kong’s Ng Wing Nam finished in third place in her group behind China’s Li Zeyan and Japan’s Yua Yamasaki and thus did not gain a main draw place.

Notably Li Zeyan and Japan’s Yua Yamasaki both recorded opening round wins; Li Zeyan accounted for Hong Kong’s Ma Yat Sum (3-11, 11-2, 11-7, 11-5), Yua Yamanashi ousted colleague Uta Horie (11-9, 11-8, 8-11, 11-6).

Somewhat similarly, there was no place in the last eight for Japan’s Haruna Ojio, the no.4 seed; she experienced a first round defeat at the hands of China’s Ding Zige (14-12, 11-7, 12-10).

Mixed fortunes for Japan; it was the same in the remaining opening round contests. Hina Kizuka beat Hong Kong’s Karen Lee Hoi Man (11-4, 11-6, 11-9); Anne Uesawa experienced defeat at the hands of China’s Li Yuqi (9-11, 11-8, 11-8, 11-7).

At the quarter-final stage Chen Yi meets Yua Yamasaki, Li Yuqi opposes Ding Zige; in the opposite half of the draw it is Li Zeyan in opposition to Hina Kizuka, Phoebe Hui Wai versus Kuai Man.

Play in Taicang concludes on Sunday 8th July.
