The opening day of the 2018 ITTF Challenge Spanish Open has arrived and there’s plenty of exciting table tennis to look forward to on Friday 29th March as seeded players take to the tables for the first time in Guadalajara.

Daria Trigolos endured a dramatic finale to her qualifying campaign for the Women’s Singles event, claiming a narrow seven games victory in her final group stage match to reach the main draw. The Belarusian competitor faces a tough fixture against no.3 Georgina Pota, a player she has never met on the international stage but will be determined to make life difficult for the Hungarian.

If you’re in search of a big first round clash then feast your eyes on the very foot of the draw as the host nation’s Galia Dvorak attempts to topple second seed Soo Wai Yam Minnie: Ranked over 100 positions above her opponent, Hong Kong’s Soo Wai Yam Minnie surely enters the tie as the big favourite to reach the Round of 16 but can Galia Dvorak cause a major upset on home soil?

Another exciting duel sees top seed Hitomi Sato begin her campaign opposing Chinese Taipei’s Lin Chia-Hsuan while another Japanese representative Satsuki Odo meets USA’s Lily Zhang.

Unlike the Women’s Singles draw, two rounds will be played out on day one of the Men’s Singles tournament with the list of 64 competitors being reduced to the final 16 hopefuls.

Ho Kwan Kit is the top seeded player on duty in the Men’s Singles category and will start his journey against Spanish opposition; the 20-year-old star from Hong Kong takes on Joan Masip, who qualified for the Round of 64 as a lucky group runner up, with either one of Spain’s Daniel Palacios or Belgium’s Lauric Jean awaiting the winner in round two.

The highest seeded host nation player, Jesús Cantero will meet Alexander Chen of Austria for the first time at an international ranking event and Portugal’s Diogo Carvalho faces Chilean contestant Juan Lamadrid.

Main draw encounters will be contested in both doubles competitions on day one while the two Under 21 events also feature.
