Five appearances on last year’s ITTF World Junior Circuit, her best victory in Slovakia, Chinese Taipei’s Su Pei-Ling was the player in form at the semi-final stage of the Girls’ Singles event at the Luxembourg 2017 ITTF World Junior Circuit Finals on Sunday 4th February.

The no.4 seed, she accounted for Miyu Nagasaki, the no.2 seed, by the very narrowest of seven games margins (11-8, 11-9, 8-11, 11-3, 8-11, 7-11, 11-9) to prevent an all Japanese final; earlier in the day, also in a hard fought full distance duel, Maki Shiomi, the top seed, had overcome Romania’s Adina Diaconu (8-11, 11-7, 11-9, 5-11, 2-11, 11-8, 11-7).

Success for Su Pei-Ling and very much against expectations when recent results are considered.

In 2015 at the Asian Junior Championships, Su Pei-Ling beat Miyu Nagasaki in the Cadet Girls’ Singles event but on their next two encounters the verdict went in favour of Miyu Nagasaki. Last year, she emerged successful at the Hong Kong Junior and Cadet Open as well as later in the year at the 2017 World Junior Championships in the Italian resort of Riva del Garda.

It was for Maki Shiomi and Adina Diaconu the first time they had met on the international scene; the final will be played later in the day.
