The China Construction Bank 2018 ITTF Europe Top 16 Cup is just around the corner with proceedings getting underway in Montreux, Switzerland on Saturday 3rd February and one player who has high hopes for the tournament is Sweden’s Matilda Ekholm.

Competing at last year’s edition of the event Matilda Ekholm impressed in Antibes with a seventh position finish, but the 35-year-old heads to Montreux with even greater ambitions.

“My goal is to win! There are always chances. The question is how good I will play and how good my opponents will play. Everyone at this level can beat each other.” Matilda Ekholm

Li Jie of the Netherlands was the standout competitor at the 2017 Europe Top 16 Cup, finishing ahead of Germany’s Petrissa Solja, who withdrew from the final after four games due to injury, to lift the Women’s Singles trophy.

Both players are set to return to the stage once again and Ekholm is particularly intrigued to see how Solja performs at the tournament.

“The favourite from the rankings I guess is Li Jie. It will be interesting to see how good Solja is after half a year’s absence.” Matilda Ekholm

2017 proved to be a positive year for Ekholm especially on the Women’s Doubles scene where she enjoyed plenty of success with Hungary’s Georgina Pota and the Swedish representative is hoping for more of the same in 2018.

“There were many unforgettable moments in 2017. All the podiums in the doubles tournaments, winner of Swiss Open and my Singles runner-up in India… My plans and goals for 2018 are to be better than 2017 and that me and Gina [Georgina Pota] continue our success in doubles.” Matilda Ekholm
