The European continent’s table tennis players will head to Switzerland in just a couple of weeks with Montreux hosting the China Construction Bank 2018 ITTF Europe Top 16 Cup competition from Saturday 3rd to Sunday 4th February and one of the stars of last year’s tournament Simon Gauzy has given a quick update ahead of the event.

Unfortunately for the Frenchman, who has been named as the third seeded player for the Men’s Singles competition, injury problems are somewhat hindering his preparation for the Europe Top 16 Cup.

“I have been suffering from a back injury for more than one month now and it’s difficult for me to come back. I have no aim at the moment… my only aim is to come back as soon as possible from that injury.” Simon Gauzy.

Antibes, France was the destination for the 2017 edition of the event and for national hero Gauzy it was a special occasion, earning a bronze medal finish in front of the home fans.

“Top 16 last year was great for me. Playing in France was for me an awesome experience and I played some great matches. I missed the final by narrow margins but that was great match.” Simon Gauzy.

2017 proved to be a highly successful year overall for Gauzy, who reached his first Men’s Singles final on the ITTF World Tour and achieved a fourth position finish at the Liebherr 2017 Men’s World Cup.

Gauzy, 23, has high hopes for the year ahead and is keen to keep working hard on improving his game to be the best player that he can.

“My main opponent will be my body… if my body is fine I will be able to face anyone. Keep improving my table tennis is my goal. If I can get my first title on the Tour that would be great but I’m focusing on my practice and how to improve!” Simon Gauzy.
