The leading outfits in both the Men’s Team and Women’s Team events at the 2017 Central American Games in Managua, Nicaragua enjoyed a successful opening day of action on Wednesday 13th December.

In the Men’s Team event where there were two groups in the initial stage of proceedings, Guatemala and Panama both remained unbeaten; in the counterpart Women’s Team competition, where play is organised on an all-play-all basis, there was also success for Guatemala, alongside El Salvador the day ended with an unblemished record.

Furthermore, in each instance, victories by the margin of three matches to nil were recorded in competitions which witnessed fixtures being conducted on the Olympic Games principle of three players per team, four singles and one doubles match should proceedings extend the full distance with no player being allowed to compete in more than two matches.

Two groups in the first stage of the Men’s Team event, outfits finishing in first and second places advanced to the semi-finals.

Selecting from Heber Moscoso, Hector Gatica, Allan Guttierez and Kevin Montufar; Guatemala finished in first place in their group ahead of the Costa Rica outfit formed by Jeison Martinez, Daniel Araya and Alfredo Sanchez. Second place for Costa Rica but it was a close call, they were extended the full five match distance by Nicaragua’s Denilson Castellon, Gary Castro and Roger Sequiera. Hero of the hour for Costa Rica was Jeison Martinez, he beat both Denilson Castellon (14-12, 9-11, 11-8, 12-14, 11-9) and Roger Sequeira (11-6, 11-8, 11-5).

First place for Guatemala, in the corresponding group it was top spot for Panama’s Omer Avi-Tal, Jacobo Vahnish and Justo Altamiranda; second position finished in the hands of El Salvador who selected from Diego Orantes, Julio Calderon, Samuel Alfonso and Oscar Villalta.

Meanwhile, in the counterpart Women’s Team event Guatemala selected from Mabelyn Enriquez, Andreas Estrada, Andrea Montufar and Lucia Cordero. They enjoyed success against Honduras represented by Rebecca Ayestas, Gina Sarmiento and Ana Guerrero, followed by victory in opposition to Costa Rica’s Angie Araya, Nicole Granados and Fiorella Vallecillo.

Similarly, El Salvador with Estefania Ramirios, Emme Arias and Wang de Ying on duty accounted by Honduras by three matches to nil, a contest in which Raquel Discua was preferred to Ana Guerrero

Success against Honduras in emphatic style, it was the same for El Salvador in their next engagement; no changes to the selection, they recorded a three-nil win against Nicaragua’s Georgina Prado, Brisa Prado and Myriam Blandino.

Play in both the Men’s Team and Women’s Team events conclude on Thursday 14th December.
