Upsetting the odds by emerging successful on the ITTF World Junior Circuit on home soil in Croatia and then the following week in Slovenia; arriving in Europe only some two months ago, on the morning of Saturday 7th October, Sun Jiayi continued to display her liking for the international arena and her liking for beating those of higher standing.

At the 2017 ITTF Challenge Polish Open in Czestochowa, she was again most impressive, contrary to status she booked her place in the final of the Under 21 Women’s Singles event.

After the previous day having accounted for Marie Migot of France, the no.11 seed (11-12, 12-10, 11-5, 11-9), she overcame Romania’s Adina Diaconu, the top seed (12-10, 12-10, 11-6), before causing France more pain by ousting Pauline Chasselin, the no.7 seed (8-11, 12-10, 7-11, 11-9, 11-8) to reserve her place in the penultimate round where the good form continued.

She ended the hopes of the host nation by beating Natalia Bajor, the no.4 seed, in three straight games (14-12, 9-11, 11-6, 11-6).

In the final, Germany’s Nina Mittelham, the no.3 seed, awaits. She accounted for Audrey Zarif of France, the no.6 seed at the semi-final stage (11-6, 11-7, 12-10) having the previous day ended the hopes of Belgium’s Margo Degraef (11-4, 11-9, 11-8), Kim Vermaas of the Netherlands (13-11, 11-7, 11-6) and Chinese Taipei’s Lin Chia-Hsuan, the no.8 seed (11-4, 11-8, 7-11, 5-11, 11-7).

Most certainly the win over Audrey Zarif was worthy of note. At the quarter-final stage she had beaten very much the player in form, she had ended the journey of England’s Tin-Tin Ho, the no.2 seed (12-10, 11-8, 11-6), the second round winner in opposition to Japan’s Miyuu Kihara, the no.2 seed (11-6, 11-8, 11-4).

The quite intriguing final is scheduled for later in the day.
