Located in northwest Greece, a first ever international training camp was held in Metamorphosis, a picturesque village situated 17 kilometres from the beautiful city of Ioannina.

Proceedings commenced on Wednesday 6th September and concluded on Monday 11th September; the initiative being administered locally by Kostas Christou, President of “Table Tennis Friends of Ioannina city” in conjunction with the Municipality of Zitsa.

The head coach was Malta’s most celebrated player, Mario Genovese now based at the Malta Hi-Impact Table Tennis Academy. He was assisted by Katia Mifsud, Theologos Kapetanides and Michalis Tolides

Overall 21 Greek and five Maltese players participated.

“On the last day of the camp everyone agreed that the camp had been a great success: Mario Genovese instilled into everybody a motivation to succeed, while fascinating and inspiring every one of the athletes. A social programme for our guests offered them a nice taste of Greece; and of course the Maltese and Greek athletes, coaches and club administrators had the opportunity of getting along and connecting with each other.” Kostas Christou

Notably the Mayor and Deputy Mayor of the local community hosted a closing dinner, where gifts were exchanged, the local club being officially declared as partner club with Hi-Impact Table Tennis Academy Malta.

“We are grateful to Mario and Katia and we are just looking forward to continuing the collaboration between our clubs and to improve even more on the learning experience for the athletes in future events.” Kostas Christou

A most successful initiative, no doubt it is just the start.
