Hopes of addition to already impressive collections of silverware; more medals are destined for the leading names on duty in the Women’s Singles events at the 2017 Spanish Para Open following the end of the first day of play, Friday 9th June, in El Prat de Llobregat.

Notably, Sweden’s Anna-Carin Ahlquist and Brazil’s Catia Oliveira (Class 2-3) remained unbeaten to top their respective groups and book semi-final places, as did Joyce Oliveira, also from Brazil and Monique Sergand of France (Class 4-5). Both imposed their authority on proceedings to advance to the penultimate round.

Similarly, in events organised on an all-play-all basis, Thailand’s Sumalee Suangtho (Class 6-8) and Indonesia’s Shelli Dwi Radayana (Class 9-10) ended the day unbeaten.

However, in Class 11, Japan’s Kanami Furukawa, the top seed, had to settle for second place in her group.

She beat colleague Yumi Ono in four games (11-6, 11-8, 9-11, 11-8) but on her next visit to the table experienced defeat at the hands of Magali Rousset of France by a similar margin (11-8, 8-11, 11-6, 11-8). Success for Magali Rousset but in her concluding contest, she was beaten in four games by (11-8, 7-11, 11-9, 11-6).

Thus the three players were level on both match and games ratio; points ratio determined the outcome and it could not have been closer.

Magali Rousset finished in first place (75:73) with Kanami Furukawa in second spot (75-74) and Yumi Ono in third position (73:76).

In events were there are two stages, players finished in first and second places in each group progress to the main draw.

Play in the individual events concludes on Saturday 10th June.
