A promising junior career, a regular face in Latin American tournaments, Manuel Moya was very much the player to set the example for the host nation as play commenced in Santiago at the Seamaster 2017 ITTF Challenge Chile Open on Wednesday 26th April.

Now 23 years old, he overcame Brazil’s Rafael Torino in his opening contest in the Men’s Singles qualification tournament (9-11, 11-5, 11-7, 11-6, 11-6), a player in the stage of his career which Manuel Moya experienced some eight years earlier. Rafael Torino is 15 years old.

It was one of two successes enjoyed by Chilean players against visiting adversaries as the Men’s Singles qualification event commenced. Additionally, Guillermo Campusano beat Argentina’s Emanuel Lara (12-10, 11-8, 11-6, 11-6).

Two wins for the hosts but they were compensated by defeat. Andres Martinez was beaten by Argentina’s Luciano Alto in closely fought full distance seven games duel (5-11, 14-12, 7-11, 8-11, 11-8, 15-13, 14-12).

Success for Argentina and there was further success for the Chilean neighbour. Francisco Sanchi caused Brazil more cause for concern by overcoming Gustavo Ushisima (11-4, 12-10, 5-11, 11-6, 11-6); whilst Lucas Bayona emerged successful in opposition to Panama’s René Schaible (14-12, 11-6, 11-5, 11-6).

Impressive performances from Luciano Alto and Francisco Sanchi but arguably pride of place for Argentina went to Pablo Tabachnik, now 39 years old, a stalwart of the national team throughout this century and earlier, he beat colleague 23 year old Juan Daher in his opening contest (11-7, 7-11, 8-11, 11-9, 11-7, 11-9).

Meanwhile, in the one further all Argentine clash, Nicolas Galvano overcame Tomas Sanchi (11-3, 11-8, 11-5, 11-6). Similarly, in the all Chilean duels Victor Coydan defeated Denys Fierro (11-4, 11-7, 11-5, 11-7), Rudy Gonzalez accounted for Marcelo Fernandez (10-12, 8-11, 4-11, 11-9, 11-5, 11-7, 11-5), whilst Alejandro Rodrigues emerged victorious in opposition to Gustavo Sepuldeva (11-3, 10-12, 11-6, 11-13, 12-14, 11-4, 11-7).

Matters underway in the group qualification stage of the Men’s Singles event. It was the same in the Under 21 Men’s Singles competition where Argentina met Chile; the outcome was honours even.

Gustavo Castillo flew the flag for the host nation. He beat Tomas Sanchi (11-7, 11-6, 11-5); Luciano Alto settled the score for Argentina by overcoming Matias Pedraza (8-11, 11-8, 11-8, 7-11, 11-6).

The remaining matches witnessed Chilean compatriots in opposition. Jorge Paredes beat Diego Sepuldeva (11-8, 11-13, 11-6, 10-12, 15-13); Denys Fierro defeated Francisco Alvarado (12-10, 12-10, 9-11, 13-11), whilst Andres Martinez accounted for Jeremias Paredes (11-8, 8-11, 11-9, 11-8).
