In Jeju, the largest island off the coast of the Korean Peninsula, in 2005, Hong Kong won the Women’s Team title at the Asian Championships; ever since that date the top step of the medal podium has always been owned by China.

Notably, it was to prove the most successful venture ever in the tournament since the inaugural event under the auspices of the Asian Table Tennis Union was staged in Beijing in 1972.

Lau Sui Fei, Lin Ling, Song Ah Sim, Tie Yana and Zhang Rui formed the successful Women’s Team squad; later Lin Ling won the Women’s Singles title, thus regaining the crown she had worn five years earlier in Doha when representing China.

Furthermore, Ko Lai Chak and Li Ching won the Men’s Doubles title for a second time; two years earlier in Bangkok they had emerged successful.

Now at the Seamaster 2015 Asian Championships, which commence in the Chinese city of Wuxi, the mantle of responsibility rests on the shoulders of players who have emerged since those memorable days.

There is no place in the Men’s Team line up for Tang Peng, nor in the Women’s Team for his wife Tie Yana; equally the name of Jiang Huajun does not appear.

Wong Chun Ting, Jiang Tianyi and Ho Kwan Kit alongside Ng Pak Nam and Lam Siu Hang form the selection for both the Men’s Team and Men’s Singles events.

Meanwhile, for the Women’s Team and Women’s Singles events, the selection reads the same: Doo Hoi Kem, Lee Ho Ching, Ng Wing Nam, Minnie Soo Wai Yam and Mak Tze Wing.

Wong Chun Ting and Ho Kwan Kit alongside Ng Pak Nam and Lam Siu Hang form the Men’s Doubles pairs; in the Women’s Doubles, Doo Hoi Kem combines with Lee Ho Ching, Minnie Soo Wai Yam partners Ng Wing Nam, a player very much returning to the fold after a period of international absence.

In the Mixed Doubles, Wong Chun Ting and Doo Hoi Kem join forces; Jiang Tianyi partners Lee Ho Ching.

Proceedings commence with the Men’s Team and Women’s Team events, the Mixed Doubles signals the start of the individual events on the evening of Tuesday 11th April.
