Winner earlier in the year on the ITTF World Junior Circuit in both Hong Kong and in her native China, Qian Tianyi secured the top step of the podium in the Junior Girls’ Singles event, on Wednesday 21st September, at the 2016 at the Asian Junior and Cadet Championships in Bangkok, Thailand.

The success underlined the fact that the current dominance possessed by China on the female scene shows little chance of abating.

In the latter stages, the16 year old accounted Korea’s Kim Jiho at the quarter-final stage (11-8, 10-12, 11-4, 11-4, 11-6), before overcoming colleagues Sun Mingyang (11-9, 11-5, 11-8, 11-9) and Yuan Yuan (11-5, 11-9, 6-11, 11-6, 11-5) to claim the top prize.

Also impressive

An impressive performance by Qian Tianyi; in the opposite half of the draw it had been the same from Yuan Yuan.

At the quarter-final stage she had overcome Japan’s Miyu Nagasaki (11-8, 11-7, 11-8, 12-10), prior to ousting Hong Kong’s Minnie Soo Wai Yam (16-14, 9-11, 11-8, 11-5, 11-6) to reserve her place in the final.

Four medals

Success in the Junior Girls’ Singles event meant that Qian Tianyi departed proceedings with two gold and two silver medals.

On the third day of play, she had joined forces with Sun Yingsha and He Zhuojia to win the Junior Girls’ Team title.

Later on the penultimate day of action, she was the runner up in the Junior Mixed Doubles event in harness with compatriot Yan Shuo, before on the concluding day of action having to settle for the same finish in the Junior Girls’ Doubles competition in partnership with Sun Mingyang.

At final hurdle of the Junior Mixed Doubles event, the duo suffered defeat at the hands of DPR Korea’s Kim Song Gun and Ham Yu Song (10-12, 4-11, 11-5, 11-5, 11-7); in the Junior Girls’ Doubles, the nemesis proved to be Hong Kong’s Minnie Soo Wai Yam and Mak Tse Wing (6-11, 11-6, 11-7, 14-12).

Japanese expense

Success for China in the Cadet Girls’ Singles event and it was success at the expense of Japan.

Shi Xunyao claimed the top prize; at the semi-final stage she beat Yuka Minagawa (11-5, 11-6, 11-4, 11-4), before overcoming Miyuu Kaihara to seal the title (11-4, 11-4, 11-6, 8-11, 7-11, 15-13).

In the counterpart half of the draw at the semi-final stage, Miyuu Kihara had accounted for Korea’s Ryu Hanna (11-5, 11-5, 11-3, 11-6).
