First staged in Hong Kong in 1996 when an all Chinese final saw Deng Yaping beat Yang Ying to claim the title; now two decades later, the 20th edition of the Women’s World Cup will be staged in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Play commences on Friday 7th October and concludes on Sunday 9th October; it will be the first time that the tournament has been held in the United States of America and only the second time outside Asia.

by Ian Marshall, ITTF Publications Editor

In 2014 the event visited Europe, being organised in the Austrian city of Linz.

The state-of-the-art Liacouras Center on the Temple University Campus will host the event.

Significant Date

Not only is the date a significant landmark in the history of the Women’s World Cup, it is also significant with regards to the fact that 20 years ago the Olympic Games were staged in Atlanta.

Notably, as a prelude the city hosted the World Team Cup in 1995, the test event for the forthcoming multi-sport event. Additionally in 1992 in Las Vegas, the United States was the home for the World Doubles Cup; later in 2007 the World Junior Championships were staged in Palo Alto.

Key Market

“The ITTF can’t wait to bring the Women’s World Cup to Philadelphia and to the United States for the first time”, said Thomas Weikert, ITTF President. “The USA is a key market for the ITTF and table tennis, with many up-and-coming young talents making way onto the international stage; we hope that this big event will help further develop the sport in the USA!”

Similar Response

Equally the forward thinking Gordon Kaye, the Chief Executive Officer of USA Table Tennis, was most positive.

“On behalf of USATT and all of the millions of table tennis enthusiasts in the United States, I would like to thank the ITTF for selecting us to host the most prestigious women’s table tennis event in the world this October”, he said. “To be able to host this field of very talented women, most of whom will also be competing at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, is incredible; we look forward to an amazing event highlighting the great sport of table tennis and the top female athletes from around the world.”
