The table tennis competition at the FISU World University Games gets underway today, with university athletes from across the globe set to compete at Messe Essen Halle 1 in one of the world’s most prestigious student sporting events.
Bochum, Duisburg, Essen, Mülheim an der Ruhr, Hagen, and Berlin are delighted to be hosting the FISU World University Games Summer. From 16 to 27 July 2025, around 8,500 student-athletes and officials from over 150 countries will compete for medals in 18 sports – making this one of the largest multi-sport events in the world in 2025. In these exceptionally sport-loving locations, the densest university landscape in Europe meets the most sports clubs in Germany.
Running from 17-24 July 2025, the table tennis competition promises to showcase the exceptional talent emerging from university programmes worldwide, with team events kicking off the action today before individual competitions take centre stage.
Schedule Highlights
The competition schedule at Messe Essen Halle 1 includes:
- 17-18 July: Men’s and women’s team group stage and Round of 16 matches
- 19-20 July: Team quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals alongside the start of individual events
- 21-22 July: Individual competition group stages and early knockout rounds, culminating in the mixed doubles final
- 23-24 July: Individual semifinals and finals across all remaining disciplines
All sessions take place at Messe Essen Halle 1 in Essen, with tickets available for spectators to witness the next generation of table tennis talent in action.
The FISU World University Games represent a unique opportunity for student-athletes to compete at the highest level whilst pursuing their academic careers. Table tennis made its FISU Games debut in 2001 and this marks the sport’s ninth appearance at the prestigious event.
The table tennis competition traditionally attracts many players who go on to represent their countries at senior international level, making it a crucial stepping stone in the sport’s development pathway.
With players representing universities from multiple continents, the competition embodies the educational values and international friendship that define the University Games movement.
