Success in the individual events the previous day at the ITTF Para Copa Costa Rica Bicentenario 2021; on Sunday 12th December, the same in the team competition for Russia’s Anastasia Kostenevich made the long journey to San José most worthwhile.

Similarly, travels from South America were rewarded. It was double gold for the Chilean trio comprising Maximiliano Rodriguez, Ignacio Torres and Manuel Echaveguren.

Competing in women’s team class 8-10, the same category as in the women’s singles, in a group organised event, Anastasia Kostenevich partnered Chile’s Ailyn Espinoza and Colombia’s Jessica Alzate to first place.

Second position finished in the hands of Guatemala’s Anali Arreoli and Great Britain’s Grace Williams.

Chileans supreme

Gold for Russia, in the men’s team events, there was no stopping Chile.

Winner of the class 4 title, Maximiliano Rodriguez joined forces with colleague Cristian Gonzalez to gain the top prize in class 1-5.

At the final hurdle the duo recorded a 2-1 win against the combination formed by Ahad Sarand of the United States and Canada’s Muhammad Mudassar.

Likewise manner

Similarly, Ignacio Torres teamed with compatriots Claudio Bahamondes and Matias Pino, the latter the player he had beaten in the men’s singles class 6-7 final (11-9, 6-11, 11-9, 11-5), to secure gold once again in class 6-7.

A group competition, they finished ahead of Colombia’s José Vargas and Daniel Sanchez.

Maintaining form, it was the same from Manuel Echaveguren, once again on duty in class 10. Alongside compatriot Gustavo Castro a 2-0 win at the final hurdle was recorded in opposition to Costa Rica’s José Quesada and José Vargas.

Ecuador and Great Britain unite

Meanwhile, in the remaining men’s team events, in class 8 it was gold for the combination of Great Britain’s Ryan Henry and Ecuador’s Paul Polo; in class 9 for Puerto Rico’s Jeriel Lopez and Shaquille Rivera.

Competing in group administered events, Ryan Henry and Paul Polo finished ahead of the United States partnership comprising Marco Makkar and Masoud Moutahed; Jeriel Lopez and Shaquille Rivera ahead of Canada’s Martin Pelletier and Asad Syed.

“As the tournament went on I became happier with how I was playing. I started to find my game more. I’m happy to bounce back in the team event and take gold after a disappointing singles event. I enjoyed playing with Paul and feel it was a great experience playing alongside him.” Ryan Henry

The ITTF Para Copa Costa Rica Bicentenario 2021 brings this year’s tournament programme to a close.
