Surprise names, surprise pairs; those who had been required to compete in the qualification tournament booked their places in the latter stages of proceedings at the Seamaster 2019 ITTF Challenge Spanish Open in Guadalajara, following success on Saturday 23rd March.

Furthermore, the first titles were decided; the under 21 men’s and women’s singles champions were crowned.

It was a day to raise the eyebrows, not a dull moment.

Men’s Singles

…………qualifier Steffen Mengel beat German colleague Ruwen Filus, the top seed (12-14, 11-9, 13-11, 11-13, 11-8, 13-15, 11-8), before at the quarter-final stage ousting Brazil’s Vitor Ishiy, the no.12 seed (11-5, 11-13, 11-2, 11-6, 11-8)

…………Qiu Dang, the no.12 seed overcame fellow pen-holder, Jesus Cantero, the no.16 seed (11-9, 11-1, 13-11, 11-5, 11-7) in the round of the last eight and thus ended the hopes of the host nation. He meets colleague Steffen Mengel in the penultimate round, thus guaranteeing Germany a place in the final.

…………Romania’s Rares Sipos, also a qualifier, accounted for the Czech Republic’s Tomas Tregler, the no.25 seed (11-9, 11-8, 7-11, 11-9, 11-7) to book his semi-final place

…………Denmark’s Zhai Yujia upset the seeding in the quarter-final round. The no.26 seed, he accounted for Sweden’s Pår Gerell, the no.17 seed (11-13, 11-6, 12-10, 11-9, 6-11, 8-11, 11-7)

Women’s Singles

………..Huang Yu-Wen caused the biggest quarter-final upset. A qualifier, she accounted for Luxembourg’s Ni Xia Lian, the no.3 seed (6-11, 13-11, 11-5, 11-8, 11-3)

……….. Italy’s Li Xiang, the no.27 seed, upset the order of merit in the quarter-finals. She overcame Slovakia’s Barbora Balazova, the no.5 seed (6-11, 8-11, 11-6, 8-11, 12-10, 11-8, 11-8)

………..Romania’s Adina Diaconu beat fellow qualifier, Liu Xin to end Spanish hopes (8-11, 13-11, 11-6, 11-4, 11-4)

………..Japan’s Miyu Kato, the top seed, made her intentions clear. She booked her place in the final by beating Chinese Taipei qualifier Li Yu-Jhun (11-4, 11-9, 11-3, 6-11, 11-4)

Men’s Doubles

………..Both pairs required to qualify, Lee Chia-Sheng and Yang Heng-Wei overcame Chinese Taipei colleagues Huang Chien-Tu and Wang Tai-Wei at the semi-final stage (11-9, 11-8, 8-11, 11-13, 14-12). In the final they meet Germany’s Kilian Ort and Qiu Dang, the no.7 seeds; in the penultimate round they accounted for Belgian bothers Laurens Devos and Robin Devos, the no.6 seeds (11-9, 11-8, 14-12).

Women’s Doubles

………..The French partnership formed by Stéphanie Loeuillette and Yan Jia Nan will face Poland’s Natalia Bajor and Natalia Partyka in the final. At the semi-final stage Stéphanie Loeuillette and Yan Jia Nan gained a walk-over against Spain’s Liu Xin and Maria Xiao. Natalia Bajor and Natalia Partyka, the no.6 seeds, beat qualifiers Chinese Taipei’s Huang Yu-Wen and Li Yu-Jhun (7-11, 12-10, 11-7, 9-11, 13-11)

Under 21 Men’s Singles

………..Argentina’s Horacio Cifuentes emerged the winner; in a full distance final he beat Frenchman Jules Rolland by the very narrowest of margins (6-11, 11-5, 9-11, 11-9, 12-10)

Under 21 Women’s Singles

………..Puerto Rico’s Adriana Diaz ended the hopes of the host nation; in the final, she accounted for Ana Garcia (9-11, 11-3, 11-6, 11-8)
