Cities are invited to submit their proposals to host two Olympic Qualification events ahead of Tokyo 2020.

The Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games are less than 18 months away and the countdown is on to decide which teams and players will be booking their place at the world’s biggest ever sporting event.

Two World Olympic Qualification events, branded #Rise2Tokyo, will be taking place during the first half of next year, and the bidding process is already open for cities interested in hosting them.

World Team Qualification Tournament

The first and most influential of the two events, the World Team Qualification Tournament will take place in January 2020 and will see nine National Olympic Committees having a team qualify directly for the Tokyo 2020 Team Event, thus accounting for over half of the total 16 available spots.

While the host NOC, Japan, has automatically a host NOC quota, six spots will be decided firstly via the Continental Team Qualification, with one quota each for Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, North America and Oceania.

Once an NOC qualifies for the Tokyo 2020 Team Event, they will be able to nominate the three players competing in the Team Event and, among them, which two will compete in the Singles Event.

Given that nine countries qualify from the World Team Qualification Tournament, this equates to 18 individual players booking their place for the Tokyo 2020 Singles Event.

World Singles Qualification Tournament

Set to take place during the second half of May 2020, the World Singles Qualification Tournament will contribute between two and eight athletes for the Tokyo 2020 Singles Event.

The Tokyo 2020 Singles Event will feature a total of 64-70 athletes, the remainder of which will qualify through a variety of avenues, which are explained in detail here.
