Germany, the winners of the Men’s event in 2017 in Luxembourg as well as Romania, the Women’s champions, alongside France in the role of hosts are not required to compete in any stage of the qualification process.

Proceedings commenced with the leading outfits from the 2017 European Team Championships competing in Group A; a total of 18 teams in each of the Men’s and Women’s events competing in six groups, three teams in each group, first and second reserving their place in Nantes.

Thus in each of the Men’s and Women’s events 12 places in Nantes were secured; add the direct entries (the hosts and the defending champions), the overall total is 14 in number.

All remaining teams competed in Group B, six groups each with three teams in the Men’s event; three groups of three and two of four teams in the Women’s competition.

Now to determine the final list of qualifiers, in each of the Men’s and Women’s events, in the final phase, there are five groups. The third placed teams from Group A compete against the teams finishing in first and second positions in Group B.

In the Men’s Team event, there are 18 teams competing to determine the final qualifiers. They have been drawn into two groups comprising three teams and three groups formed by four teams. In the Women’s event where there are 16 teams; it is four groups of three teams, one of four.
