Selected time and again, earlier in the week to commence matters for Argentina and Brazil in the Women’s Team competition at the Sparta 2018 ITTF Pan American Championships in the Chilean capital city of Santiago; those partnerships emerged the combinations to upset the order of merit as the Women’s Doubles event commenced on the morning of Saturday 24th November.

Respectively, Camila Arguelles and Ana Codina, the no.5 seeds, secured semi-final places and thus a podium finish, as did Gui Lin and Jessica Yamada, the no.6 seeds.

After recording an opening round win against Guatemala’s Lucia Cordero and Andrea Montufar, the no.11 seeds (11-7, 11-3, 11-3), Camila Arguelles and Ana Codina ended the hopes of the host nation; they overcame Judith Morales and Paulina Vega, the no.4 seeds, in a full distance five games contest (9-11, 11-9, 10-12, 11-2, 11-8).

A surprise win, perhaps not; on the ITTF World Tour in 2015, Camila Arguelles and Ana Codina had finished Women’s Doubles runners up in both Buenos Aires and in what appears to their favourite city, Santiago. They are a very well established partnership.

Success contrary to status for Camila Arguelles and Ana Codina, it was the same for Gui Lin and Jessica Yamada. They reserved their semi-final place courtesy of success in opposition to Puerto Rico’s Adriana Diaz and Melanie Diaz, the no.3 seeds (11-8, 5-11, 11-8, 11-6), having in the opening round received a walk-over when due to face the Dominican Republic’s Eva Brito and Yasiris Ortiz, the no.10 seeds.

At the semi-final stage, Gui Lin and Jessica Yamada, face Canada’s Alicia Côté and Zhang Mo, the top seeds and defending champions, Camila Arguelles and Ana Codina oppose Wu Yue and Lily Zhang, the no.2 seeds.

Direct entries to the quarter-finals, Alicia Côté and Zhang Mo beat Cuba’s Lisi Castillo and Idalys Lovet, the no.9 seeds (11-9, 11-6, 11-6); Wu Yue and Lily Zhang overcame Colombia’s Paula Medina and Maria Perdomo, the no.8 seeds (11-8, 11-2, 11-6).

The semi-finals and finals will be played on Sunday 25th November.
