Third seeds in the Women’s Team event, an eighth place finish, for the host nation at the Sparta 2018 ITTF Pan American Championships staged in the Chilean capital city of Santiago; as play started in the Women’s Singles event in Friday 23rd November, it was time to set the record straight.

Paulina Vega and Daniela Ortega duly responded to book third round places; alas for colleagues, despite brave efforts, for Judith Morales and Valentina Rios, the woes of earlier in the week, continued.

Paulina Vega, the no.5 seed and very much the player on whose shoulders the aspirations of the nation rest, duly progressed; a direct entry to the second round, she accounted for Argentina’s Agustina Iwasa, the no.26 seed (11-7, 11-4, 14-12, 9-11, 11-5).

Likewise, Daniela Ortega, the no.10 seed, not required to raise her racket in anger in the opening round, advanced; she recorded a second round success in opposition to Mexico’s Monica Muñoz, the no.27 seed (11-9, 6-11, 11-8, 11-4, 11-6).

Conversely, for Judith Morales and Valentina Rios, after taking a liking to Mexico it was defeat. Judith Morales, the no.21 seed, beat Clio Barcenas, 30 seed (11-9, 4-11, 9-11, 11-7, 11-9, 11-6), before losing to Puerto Rico’s Melanie Diaz, the no.13 seed (9-11, 11-5, 11-6, 11-9, 8-11, 8-11). Slightly differently, Valentina Rios, the no.40 seed, upset the odds; she overcame Marbella Aceves, the no.28 seed, by the narrowest of seven games margins (10-12, 8-11, 11-9, 12-10, 13-15, 12-10, 11-9), prior to experiencing defeat when facing Guatemala’s Mabelyn Enriquez, the no.15 seed (11-5, 12-10, 11-9, 11-6).

Mixed fortunes for Chile, for the leading names, the major contenders for honours, it was positive fortunes.

Canada’s Zhang Mo, the top seed, opened her account by beating Angela Guan, the no.22 seed, from the United States (11-5, 12-10, 11-2, 11-6); equally impressive, Puerto Rico’s Adriana Diaz, the no.2 seed and defending champion, accounted for Jessica Yamada, the no.23 seed and pivotal the previous day to Brazil’s Women’s Team success. Adriana Diaz prevailed in straight games (11-4, 11-4, 13-11, 11-4).

Imposing performances, it was the same from the next in line. Wu Yue of the United States, the no.3 seed, beat Colombia’s Cory Tellez, the no.42 seed (11-3, 11-9, 11-7, 11-9); Bruna Takahashi, the no.4 seed and star of the show for Brazil one day earlier, ended the hopes of Cuba’s Idalys Lovet, the no.17 seed (11-3, 11-4, 11-6, 11-6).

The third round and quarter-finals of the Women’s Singles event will be held on Saturday 24th November.
