Opening round wins for Japan’s Miu Hirano, China’s Sun Yingsha and Singapore’s Feng Tianwei in the Women’s Singles event at the Seamaster 2018 ITTF World Tour Platinum Liebherr Austrian Open on Thursday 8th November means all have but mathematically booked places in the forthcoming Grand Finals.

Also, as play continued, Japan’s Honoka Hashimoto, kept her hopes alive but the odds are not in her favour.

Honoka Hashimoto and Sun Yingsha both ended the hopes of the host nation; Honoka Hashimoto beat Amelie Solja, the no.16 seed (11-3, 11-1, 11-5, 11-5), Sun Yingsha accounted for Sofia Polcanova (8-11, 11-3, 2-11, 11-5, 11-4, 11-5).

“She is a very strong player. I had problems concentrating; I have a cold. In the final game I risked more, in the end too much. The tournament is over for me now, it’s time to recover. Overall, it’s great that Linz hosts such a big tournament; that makes me proud for in my hometown.” Sofia Polcanova

Likewise, Miu Hirano, the no.9 seed, overcame colleague, Hina Hayata in seven games (6-11, 11-6, 5-11, 11-3, 13-11, 7-11, 11-8); similarly by the very narrowest of margins Feng Tianwei, the no.11 seed, ended the hopes of Ukraine’s Margaryta Pesotska (11-8, 11-9, 10-12, 9-11, 12-10, 7-11, 14-12).

At the start of the day on the Women’s Singles Standings, Miyu Hirano occupied the no.13 spot (417 points), followed by Sun Yingsha (416 points) and Feng Tianwei (415 points); further down the list, Honoka Hashimoto appears at no.27 (173 points). She will need to reach the final to have any chance of qualification.

It is the same for Hong Kong’s Doo Hoi Kem (165 points), who earlier in the day reserved her second round place by beating Japan’s Hitomi Sato, the no.14 seed (12-10, 8-11, 11-6, 7-11, 12-10, 7-11, 12-10). Meanwhile, in the remaining contests as play in the lower half of the Women’s Singles draw came to a conclusion, it was success for those who are home and dry.

China’s Ding Ning, the no.2 seed, beat Singapore’s Yu Mengyu (9-11, 11-5, 11-7, 11-5, 11-7), colleague Wang Manyu, the no.6 seed, ousted Germany’s Petrissa Solja.
