An agonizing fourth place in the Women’s Singles event at the recently concluded Buenos Aires 2018 Youth Olympic Games, on Tuesday 23rd October it was back to action for Archana Girish Kamath; she was on duty in the first preliminary round of the Under 21 Women’s Singles event at the 2018 ITTF Challenge Belgium Open in De Haan.

Furthermore, she made a most successful start as did her five colleagues; it was quite the perfect initiation for India.

Archana Girish Kamath, no doubt full of confidence following her efforts in the Argentine capital city, accounted for a most worthy adversary in the guise of Daria Chernoray (11-9, 2-11, 11-3, 11-9).

An impressive performance, it was very much the same from Sreeja Akula who beat Germany’s Vivien Scholz (11-8, 8-11, 11-7, 11-9), as it was from Ayhika Mukherjee, the victor in opposition to Finland’s Anna Kirichenko (6-11, 11-5, 11-5, 11-5).

Wins in four games; it was the same for Moumita Dutta. She overcame Romania’s Arina Singeorzan (11-9, 2-11, 11-3, 11-9); meanwhile, for Selena Selvakumar it was a straight games success when facing Slovakia’s Natalia Grigelova (11-7, 11-4, 13-11). A relatively comfortable win for Selena Selvakumar; for Shruti Amrute, life could not have less demanding. She received a walk-over when due to face Nolwenn Fort of France.

Success for India, there was similar success for China; five players on duty, all treading their toes in international waters, only one member of the group experienced defeat. Wei Lan was beaten by Poland’s Julia Slasak (11-5, 11-6, 11-5).

Otherwise, it was success upon success for the Asian visitors. Ma Ruijia beat Luxembourg’s Sarah Meyer (11-3, 6-11, 11-7, 13-11), Cai Jiangnan accounted for Norway’s Rebekka Carlsen (11-5, 3-11, 11-6, 11-7). Likewise, Gu Tingting overcame Tanje Helle of the Netherlands (11-5, 3-11, 11-6, 11-7), Guo Xinyi ended the hopes of Bulgaria’s Maria Yovkova (11-3, 11-7, 11-7).

Play in the second preliminary round will be staged later in the day.
