Esmerlyn Castro, the no.3 seed, absent injured but there was success upon success for the Dominican Republic as play progressed in the group qualification stage of the Women’s Singles event at the 2018 Caribbean Championships in Kingston, Jamaica on Friday 28th September.

Eva Brito, the top seed, duly finished in first place in her group as did colleague, Yasiris Ortiz, the no.2 seed and Dahyana Rojas, the no.10 seed.

Now 23 years old and with a decade of international experience, Eva Brito accounted for Martinique’s Armelle Pruvost (11-4, 11-5, 11-8) and Jamaica’s Larissa McLaughlin (11-1, 11-5, 11-8).

Likewise, without surrendering a single game, Yasiris Ortiz also overcame opponents from Martinique and Jamaica; representing he former, she beat Emilie Kichenama (11-3, 11-2, 11-6), before defeating the latter’s Brittany Murray (11-8, 11-6, 11-6). Larissa McLaughlin and Brittany Murray finished in second positions and thus advanced to the main draw.

Minimal problems for Eva Brito and Yasiris Ortiz, for Dahyana Rojas, life was more testing. After accounting for Mévéna Avila, like Armelle Pruvost and Emilie Kichenama from Martinique (11-3, 11-5, 11-3), she needed the full five games to overcome both Trinidad and Tobago’s Brittany Joseph (11-5, 7-11, 11-8, 10-12, 11-6) and Puerto Rico’s Gabriella Vazquez; against the Puerto Rican she only emerged successful by the very minimal two point margin in the decider (12-10, 11-9, 12-14, 8-11, 11-9). Brittany Joseph duly finished in second place and advanced to the main draw.

Success as status advised; in fact there was only one name to secure first place contrary to expectations.

Guyana’s Jody-Ann Blake accounted for Kenady King of Barbados, the no.8 seed (11-7, 11-7, 11-4) to secure first position in her group; for Kenady King it was her only defeat thus second place and progress to the main draw was reserved.

Otherwise for the leading names on duty it was a day without defeat and first place.

Play in the main draw follows later in the day, the tournamenty concludes on Saturday 29th September.
