Runners up in 2013, the second year the tournament was staged; for Austria’s Robert Gardos and Daniel Habesohn, at the Seamaster 2018 ITTF World Tour Czech Open, there will be no such accolade this year in the city of Olomouc.

Occupying the no.6 seeded position, on Thursday 23rd August, they were beaten in the opening round by Poland’s Marek Badowski and Patryk Zatowka; they experienced a four games reverse (11-5, 13-11, 8-11, 11-7).

Defeat for the Austrian who had been crowned European champions in 2012 in Herning, for the pair they beat in that final, Sweden’s Mattias Falck and Kristian Karlsson, the no.4 seeds, there was success. They accounted for Poland’s Jakub Dyjas and Tomasz Kotowski (12-10, 11-3, 11-6).

An outcome as status advised for the Swedish duo but there were more surprises. Pavel Platonov and Vladimir Samsonov of Belarus, the no.7 seeds, lost to the combination of Denmark’s Anders Lind and Hungary’s Bence Majoros (11-9, 11-8, 7-11, 13-11); the host nation’s Pavel Sirucek and Tomas Tregler, the no.8 seeds, departed at the hands of the Korea Republic’s Cho Eonrae and Kim Minhyeok (13-11, 8-11, 4-11, 11-5, 11-7).

Otherwise, as with Mattias Falck and Kristian Karlsson, it was success for the seeded pairs.

The combination of Germany’s Patrick Franziska and Denmark’s Jonathan Groth, the top seeds and defending champions, beat Frenchmen Can Akkuzu and Joe Seyfried (11-6, 11-6, 11-13, 11-9); likewise from Germany, Ruwen Filus in partnership with colleague Ricardo Walther, the no.2 seeds, accounted for Korea Republic’s Baek Hogyun and Kim Daewoo (11-2, 5-11, 13-11, 11-5).

German success, there was also success for Hungary. Nandor Ecseki and Adam Szudi, the no.3 seeds, beat Russia’s Vladimir Sidorenko and Grigory Vlasov (11-8, 11-7, 11-6). Similarly, Japan’s Tomokazu Harimoto and Yuto Kizukuri, the no.5 seeds, overcame the partnership formed by Belgium’s Robin Devos and Slovakia’s Lubomir Pistej (11-7, 11-6, 6-11, 11-8).

At the quarter-final stage Patrick Franziska and Jonathan Groth meet Tomokazu Harimoto and Yuto Kizukuri, Anders Lind and Bence Majoros oppose Nandor Ecseki and Adam Szudi. In the opposite half of the draw it is Mattias Falck and Kristian Karlsson versus Cho Eonrae and Kim Minhyeok, Marek Badowski and Patryk Zatowka in opposition to Ruwen Filus and Ricardo Walther.

Both the quarter and semi-final matches will be played on Friday 24th August.
