Quarter-finalist one year ago when beaten by the champion elect, Egypt’s Omar Assar; on Saturday 11th August, Frenchman Antoine Hachard booked his place in the same round of the Men’s Singles event at the 2018 ITTF Challenge Seamaster Nigeria Open in Lagos.

Not only did he reserve his place amongst the last eight names, he caused the biggest third round upset.

The no.16 seed, he accounted for Russia’s Alexey Liventsov, the no.2 seed, in six games (8-11, 11-6, 9-11, 11-8, 11-6, 11-5).

Success for Antoine Hachard against the odds; it was the same for Romania’s Rares Sipos; the no.29 seed, he beat Egypt’s Mohamed El-Beiali, the no.11 seed, in a most convincing fashion; a straight games win was the order of proceedings (11-2, 11-7, 11-8, 11-6)-

A sound defeat for Mohamed El-Beiali, it was the same for the host nation’s Segun Toriola; the no.14 seed, he found Finland’s Benedek Olah, the no.3 seed, in an unforgiving mood. Likewise, a straight games verdict was administered (11-2, 11-7, 11-3, 11-8).

The end of the road for Mohamed El-Beiali and Segun Toriola; it was the same for qualifier Azeez Olugbenga Jamiu, like Segun Toriola from Nigeria, he was beaten by Scotland’s Gavin Rumgay, the no.9 seed (7-11, 11-9, 7-11, 11-9, 11-4, 11-4).

Defeats, it means that only one player from the continent of Africa remains. Quadri Aruna, the top seed, overcame Nigerian colleague, Makanjuola Kazeem, the no.32 seed (11-9, 11-7, 11-3, 11-7) to keep his title hopes alive and well.

Differing fortunes for Nigeria; however that was not the scenario for Thailand. They emerged the one nation to be represented by more than one player in the Men’s Singles quarter-finals.

Supanut Wisutmaythangkoon, the no.10 seed, beat India’s Raj Mondal, the no.31 seed (11-4, 12-10, 8-11, 7-11, 7-11, 11-9, 11-9); Padasak Tanviriyavechakul, the no.17 seed, overcame Frenchman, Joe Seyfried, the no.19 seed (11-9, 7-11, 4-11, 11-5, 12-10, 11-6).

Success for Thailand, there was also success for Argentina, Horacio Cifuentes, the no.7 seed, overcame India’s Ronit Bhanja (11-7, 11-4, 8-11, 11-9, 11-9).

At the quarter-final stage Quadri Aruna meets Rares Sipos, Supanut Wisutmaythangkoon faces Benedek Olah; in the adjacent half of the draw, it is Gavin Rumgay in opposition to Padasak Tanviriyavechakul, Horacio Cifuentes versus Antoine Hachard.

The matches will be staged later in the day in the evening session of play.
