by ITTF-Oceania

Australia’s Heming Hu has defeated New Zealand’s Dean Shu 4- to win the 2018 ITTF-Oceania Cup Men’s Singles title in Port Vila, Vanuatu.

Impressively, Hu won the title on his debut at the event.

Shu, the reigning Oceania Junior Boy’s Champion looked like he may have been able to muster an upset, as he took a 2-1 lead and gave himself the opportunity to close out the  the fourth. But Hu was able to turn the ship around and take back control of the match.

With the fourth game in hand, the Aussie never looked back and sailed to a 4-2 victory.

Heming Hu pocketed $6000AUD and will head to Paris, France later in the year for the ITTF Men’s World Cup.

Meanwhile in the playoff for bronze it was a matchup between David Powell and Matthew Ball. After losing to Ball earlier in the Group Stage, Powell made no mistake this time around. The defending champion closed out the match 4-1 and left Port Vila with a bronze medal.
