One Kiwi looks to his laundry for a lucky charm, while a Gold Coast local has swept the U21 girls' events.

The first singles medals have been decided at the 2018 ITTF-Oceania Championships.

Gold Coast local Danni-Elle Townsend claimed the U21 Women’s Singles title with a 3-0 win over Parleen Kaur.

The victory means that Townsend took home every U21 title on offer on the Gold Coast, bagging four gold medals. Even more impressively, the fourteen year old won every final in straight games.

Meanwhile in the Boys’ Singles it was New Zealand that continued their domination in the youth category.

Nathan Xu saw off Australia’s Benjamin Gould to give New Zealand its first individual gold of the week. The local supporters couldn’t get the Aussie over the line, and Xu took down Gould 3-1.

It was somewhat of a surprise final.

Xu’s teammate Dean Shu, who had been running hot all week, but was knocked out by Xu the previous day in an epic encounter.

Today the Kiwi made sure to carry over yesterday’s form.

“It was a good match and I’m happy to get the win,” said Xu.

And what does he put down to his stellar performance today?

“It’s definitely my socks.”

A lucky charm, or just comfy feet? Either way the Aussies may look at stealing those socks next time around.

Congratulations to the U21 Singles WINNERS at #ITTFOceaniaChamps!?
