Recruiting young umpires for a high-level introduction to officiating duties; the introduction of the ITTF Young Umpires’ Project is a key initiative.

Eyes set on the long term.

Daniela Gomes, ITTF Development and Education & Training Projects Officer

Following the September application launched by the ITTF Education and Training department, the Umpires’ and Referees’ Committee considered 67 amazing applications from all over the world.

There were 14 nominations from each of Africa and Asia, no less than 18 from Europe and the same number from Latin America. Meanwhile, two were received from North America and one from Oceania.

Following a meticulous selection process, 42 aspiring young officials, between 18 and 26 years of age, were selected.

Online education – the next step

Ongoing learning and maximum commitment is requested. As a follow-up, 18 women and 24 men from 34 countries will soon start an online course to be completed from Wednesday 1st to Thursday 30th November 2017.

More work, more opportunities

A final selection of eight to 12 suitable umpires passing the online examination for Buenos Aires 2018 is due to be announced on or before Friday 15th December 2017.

Finishing training with a possible invitation to officiate at an ITTF Road to Buenos Aires 2018 qualification event will be the dream for the 42 aspiring officials; those selected will further then benefit from a two-day extra course prior for the Buenos Aires 2018 Youth Olympic Games.

Win – win situation

No matter what the final outcome all successful candidates will receive a certificate.

Additionally, successful national umpires will qualify as international umpires from mid-2018, thus enriching the table tennis community and advancing the sport.
