Accolades a plenty have come the way of Quadri Aruna, the quarter-final place at the Liebherr 2014 Men’s World Cup in Düsseldorf and more recently at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, are the stand out moments of his career to date.

However, as yet no ITTF World Tour Men’s Singles title has ever come his way; at the forthcoming 2017 ITTF Challenge Seamaster Nigeria Open, which starts on Wednesday 9th August; on home soil, the man who will celebrate his 29th birthday on the day the qualification event starts, has a chance to put the record straight.

Two years ago, he did enjoy success at the GAC Group 2015 Nigeria Open; he won the Men’s Doubles title in partnership with colleague, Makanjuola Kazeem but in the Men’s Singles final experienced defeat. He was beaten by Egypt’s Omar Assar.

Last year, commitments in the French League meant that neither Quadri Aruna nor Omar Assar could compete in Lagos; in 2017 they are both in action. In the Men’s Singles event, they are the respective top two seeds.

Quadri Aruna spoke to Olalekan Okusan, the ITTF-Africa Press Officer

“There is no doubt that this is the first time we will be having top players with six of them among the top 100 in the world. I am aware of the quality of these players and I know it is going to be a tough one. I am also optimistic that I can repeat the feat that saw me claim the 2014 Africa Top 16 Cup in Lagos. The support from the home fans will surely be helpful.

I strongly believe that it is possible for me to win the title this year and I don’t think I will be playing under any pressure as I will only be enjoying myself. I think I have the potential to become the champion and I will be hoping for a good draw as well. Also from the last 16, it promises to be tough and exciting for any player that makes it to that stage.

I think the best of table tennis action will be on display for five days in Lagos and I believe fans will enjoy every bit of the competition. I am so excited and I cannot wait to see the tournament to start.”
