The first awards have still to be presented at the Sun International 2016 World Junior Championships in Cape Town, South Africa; that will take place on Saturday 3rd December, when the Boys’ Team and Girls’ Team events conclude in the Grand West Casino and Entertainment World.

However, already one person present has already received an award; Olalekan Okusan, the Press Officer for the ITTF-African Table Tennis Federation, has been named Nigeria’s Sports Journalist of the Year.

by Ian Marshall, ITTF Publications Editor

The announcement was made early on the evening of Friday 2nd December at a splendid ceremony staged in the Banquet Hall of the Eko Hotel in Victoria Island, Lagos, Nigeria.

It is for Olalekan Okusan, who is a correspondent for Nation Sport in Nigeria, the second time that his efforts have been nationally recognised.

In 2012 he was named Sports Journalist of the Year when receiving the Nigeria Media Merit Award (NMMA); on that occasion, he beat other nominees for the award after three of his articles had been judged by an award panel.

“Okusan, formerly of the Guardian Newspapers but now with The Nation is one of the hardest working sports reporters in the country, devoting time and energy to comprehensive coverage of the often underserved tennis beat. A past winner of the Sports Business Media Award Sports Writer of the Year prize, Okusan commands a lot of clout in his field and has helped countless talents secure much needed press coverage”, Ynaija.com

The event in Lagos was attended by Solomon Dalong, Nigeria’s Minister of Youth and Sports, as well as captains of industries, past and present athletes as well as Nigeria’s Top Sport Personalities.
