Staged at the Águilas de la Montaña Table Tennis Club in Utuado, located high in the central mountainous area of Puerto Rico, on Monday 15th June, players from the national team completed one week of training as the lockdown regulations are step by step relaxed.

Now they look forward to the return of an international tournament calendar and the heat of competition.

Each day they practise from 8.30 am to 12.00 noon and then return to their homes to conduct physical training.

Under the guidance of Eladio Afanador and Bladimir Diaz, the respective men’s and women’s national team coach, all took the COVID-19 molecular test, all were tested negative.

Strict protocol is followed including temperature screening, cleaning as well as disinfecting hands and shoes prior to entering the premises. Tables are arranged in order to meet the necessary space requirement; clear instructions being afforded during breaks in play that masks are required.

All equipment is cleaned thoroughly at the end of each training session.

In good shape

Under the guidance of Eladio Afanador and Bladimir Diaz, the respective men’s team and women’s team national coaches, it is back to action in state of the art premises.

“We have been able to train again in the conditions the players need, following all the security indications and measures. I have found all the athletes of the team in a good shape. Seems they have been doing a good physical preparation in their homes; we are very excited to work with the players.” Bladimir Diaz

Positive words from Bladimir Diaz, it was very much the same from both Adriana Diaz and Brian Afanador, the island’s leading players.

“We were missing being back at the club. We are really happy to come back to play in a big facility, not just in our houses. Here we have teammates who we can play with, so I’m super happy to be back and hope we can compete again soon.” Adriana Diaz

“We were really waiting to back to our temple. We can now have the partners that we normally have so we are very excited to be back.” Brian Afanador

Players

Present alongside Brian Afanador in the men’s team are Daniel Gonzalez, Angel Naranjo, Gabriel Perez, Richard Pietri, Dereck Valentin and Yadriel Villanueva.

Meanwhile, additional to Adriana Diaz, sisters Melanie and Fabiola are both present as are Daniely Rios and Kristal Torres.
