Home for the table tennis events at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, the Peking University once again bids welcome; from Sunday 4th to Tuesday 6th October the campus will be the destination for an ITTF International Referees and Evaluators Conference.

Later in the year for a similar gathering, the destination will be England; the Edgbaston Park Hotel in Birmingham will be the host from Friday 27th to Sunday 29th November.

by Werner Thury, ITTF Umpires and Referees Committee

The International Table Tennis Federation makes great efforts in the development and continuous education of match officials.

Other than the current Blue Badge Programme for Advanced International Umpires, the ITTF Umpires and Referees Committee is also working on a Referee Programme for the education and development of existing referees, as well as for a new generation of referees.

Aims in conjunction with the participants are to:

  • introduce the performance assessment and evaluation process.
  • strengthen the knowledge and skills and raise the standard and competence of current International Referees.
  • review the referee’s role and co-operation with other tournament officials.
  • improve communication and presentation skills.
  • strengthen skills in the field of draws and scheduling.
  • discuss the consistency of referee decisions.

Closing date

The closing date for confirmation of attendance is Saturday 1st August.
