Well known for Aerobic Table Tennis, established eight years ago, a concept aimed in particular to encourage girls to play table tennis by matching exercises to table tennis strokes, Steve Rowe has now designed a new concept to both educate and encourage participation in the sport.

The initiative is Ping Pong Literacy.

by Ian Marshall, Editor

It is an early learning programme that teaches children to read and is combined with table tennis, in the view of Steve Rowe, it is the perfect combination.

“For the last year I have been going to bed around 2.00 am and waking up at 5.00 am to begin developing the programme every day, I think of nothing else other than engaging young children in our fantastic sport. Eight years into running the Aerobic Table Tennis programme, I wanted something that would engage children from age three years old. I think this age group gets left behind when it comes to physical activities and learning table tennis. Most people in Europe especially, only start to engage children from say six or seven years old. I think this is too late.” Steve Rowe

Recently Steve Rowe made another step in his career, he became a brand ambassador for Stag International.

“Mr Vivek Kohli invited me to join the Stag family, told me his vision for table tennis, this made it very easy for me to say yes.” Steve Rowe

Notably Vivek Kohli supports Steve Rowe in his efforts to promote Ping Pong Literacy.

“We are very pleased to have Steve in the Stag family. I see the same passion in him for table tennis as I see in myself. We plan to make table tennis popular worldwide to the masses and this ping pong literacy programme is brilliant. This programme completely aligns with the vision of Stag and it will help educate children not just table tennis but to understand and learn subjects and numbers and correct pronunciations. Besides the literacy programme we will be sending Steve to various locations worldwide as today we are sponsors of 56 national teams. It gives access to us in every continent. We see a bright future for Steve and welcome him in the ever growing Stag family. Love all love table tennis.” Vivek Kohli

In order to attract young children, the animated rabbit named Pong, is at the forefront of the promotion.

“It is very easy for the teachers to deliver in lesson time; all they need is a television screen or an interactive whiteboard. The video is played and the children just copy Pong on screen. Pong will teach the children things like early learning phonics, letter sounds, numbers, colours, size, alphabet, days of the week, months of the year and many more early learning academic subjects. At the same time Pong will also teach children all about table tennis, the rules and how to play.” Steve Rowe

Notably the initiative was showcased at the Stag booth in Budapest.

“The reaction in Budapest was nothing short of amazing. Together with Stag International, Vivek and Rakesh Kohli, the programme will be launched worldwide. Most certainly we will launch throughout India and many other countries. I would like to give enormous thanks to Stag International.” Steve Rowe

A bold project, the reaction from teachers will be interesting to monitor.
