Finalists decided, there was no shortage of surprises on Friday 5th April, as play advanced to the gold medal round in both the under 21 men’s singles and under 21 women’s singles events at the 2019 South American Championships in the Argentine capital city of Buenos Aires.

At the end of the day, in the former, Peru’s Rodrigo Hidalgo, the no.4 seed, will confront Chile’s Nicolas Burgos to decide the title; in the latter, Venezuela’s Neridee Niño, the no.3 seed, will oppose Brazil’s Giulia Takahashi.

Nicolas Burgos and Giulia Takahashi are names to note, in junior events both have enjoyed success, at the recent 2019 Chile Junior and Cadet Open, Nicolas Burgos was the junior boys’ singles runner up, Giulia Takahashi, the junior girls’ singles winner. However, neither holds an under 21 world ranking. Thus neither was seeded.

Nicolas Burgos, after having accounted for Paraguay’s David Leon in the opening round (11-7, 11-5, 11-5), overcame Argentina’s Francisco Sanchez, the no.2 seed (11-6, 11-6, 11-8) to reserve his place in the penultimate round, where he caused Argentina more pain by overcoming Martin Bentancor (14-12, 11-7, 11-5). Notably, one round earlier, Martin Bentancor had ousted Ecuador’s Emiliano Riofrio, the no.3 seed (11-6, 11-3, 13-11).

Surprises, similarly in the opposite half of the under 21 men’s singles draw, there were noteworthy upsets; at the quarter-final stage Chile’s Andres Martinez, not seeded, accounted for Bolivia’s Eduardo Lizarazu, the top seed (11-5, 11-8, 11-6), before experiencing defeat at the hands of Rodrigo Hidalgo (11-7, 11-5, 11-6).

Meanwhile, in the later rounds of the under 21 women’s singles event, Giulia Takahashi received a walk-over when due to face Chile’s Daniela Ortega, the top seed, prior to reserving her place in the final courtesy of success in opposition to Paraguay’s Leyla Gomez, the no.4 seed (11-5, 11-8, 11-8).

A semi-final upset, it was the same in the opposite half of the draw; Neridee Niño accounted for Chile’s Valentina Rios, the no.2 seed (11-7, 11-5, 11-6) to book her place in the title deciding contest.

The final of both the under 21 men’s singles and under 21 women’s singles events will be held on Sunday 7th April.
