Led as they have been for now well over a decade by the ever faithful Paula Medina; Colombia emerged the surprise outfit in the initial phase of the women’s team event at the 2019 South American Championships in Buenos Aires on Wednesday 3rd April.

Supported by Cory Tellez and Maria Perdomo, the no.4 seeds, top place in the first stage group was secured.

Paula Medina, the leading light but it was very much a team effort as a 3-0 win was posted against the top seeds, Brazil’s Livia Lima, Giulia Takahashi and Laura Watanabe, followed by the same margin of success when facing the no.5 seeds, the Peruvian trio formed by Isabel Duffo, Angela Mori and Francesca Vargas.

Defeat for Brazil but there was a degree of consolation, they secured second place in the group but only just; in their opening fixture of the day, they were extended the full five match distance by Peru, a contest in which Micaela Regaira was preferred to Isabel Duffo.

The player to cause the Brazilians problems was Angela Mori, she beat both Livia Lima (9-11, 11-9, 11-6, 11-9) and Laura Watanabe (12-10, 11-7, 11-4). Problems for Livia Lima but she emerged her country’s saviour; in the vital fifth and concluding match of the engagement she overcame Micaela Regaira (11-5, 11-6, 11-9).

Meanwhile, in the counterpart group matters progressed according to status. Chile, the no.2 seeds, selecting from Paulina Vega, Judith Morales, Daniela Ortega and Valentina Rios, duly finished in first place but without experiencing testing times; in their second contest of the day they needed the full five matches to overcome, the no.3 seeds, the host nation trio comprising Camila Arguelles, Ana Codina and Paula Fukuhara.

Defeat for Argentina but it was their only defeat of the day; second place in the group and progress to the main draw was secured. In the penultimate round they face Colombia, in the adjacent half of the draw Brazil and Chile meet.

Play in the women’s team event concludes on Thursday 4th April.
