Aiming for a place on the podium; when play concluded on Saturday 23rd March, the hopes of the leading players in the junior boys’ singles event at the 2019 Chile Junior and Cadet Open in Santiago were very much alive.

The top four names, those of the host nation’s Nicolas Burgos and Andres Martinez alongside Argentina’s Santiago Lorenzo and Brazil’s Rafael Torino all reserved quarter-final places.

Likewise, also from Chile, Jorge Paredes, the no.6 seed, progressed but the remaining names were surprises; Brazil’s Kenzo Carmo and Diogo Silva advanced to the round of the last eight, a situation that applied also to Argentina’s Matias Guadalupe.

Kenzo Carmo, the no.9 seed, after finishing in first place in his group, booked his place in the quarter-finals courtesy of success against Argentina’s Matias Velarde (13-11, 11-8, 9-11, 11-5, 11-7) the surprise first round winner in opposition to Canada’s Alexander Bu, the no.5 seed (11-8, 11-9, 11-9, 11-4).

Meanwhile, in the group stage, Diogo Silva, the no.22 seed had finished in first place ahead of Matias Guadalupe, the no.11 seed, emerging successful in four games when the pair met (11-7, 11-8, 9-11, 11-4). In the main draw the Brazilian reserved his last eight place by beating Peru’s Adolfo Cucho, the no.8 seed (19-17, 8-11, 11-7, 11-4, 11-7); at the same stage Matias Guadalupe accounted for the host nation’s Jermias Paredes (13-11, 11-8, 9-11, 11-5, 11-7), after having beaten Peru’s Felipe Duffoo, the no.7 seed, in the opening round (11-9, 9-11, 8-11, 11-8, 11-7, 11-7).

Progress to the quarter-final stage in the boys’ singles event, in the boys’ doubles the finalists are known and there are no surprises; in the title deciding contest, the top seeds meet. Nicolas Burgos and Andres Martinez, the top seeds, face Santiago Lorenzo and Matias Velarde, the no.2 seeds, in the title deciding contest.

Play in Santiago concludes on Sunday 24th March.
