Success against the odds for Gianella Huapaya, it was the same for Ecuador’s Mylena Plaza, the player who the previous day had remained unbeaten to top the group ahead of Gianella Huapaya. In the opening round she accounted for Brazil’s Tamyres Fukase, the no.6 seed (5-11, 11-7, 14-12, 5-11, 11-8, 11-6).

A shock defeat for the top seed, not for the remaining leading names; also from Ecuador, Nathaly Paredes, the no.2 seed alongside Brazil’s Livia Lima and Chile’s Valentina Rios, the next two names in the order of merit, duly reserved quarter-final places.

Likewise, in the junior boys’ singles event, Brazil’s Guilherme Teodoro, Chile’s Nicolas Burgos and Argentina’s Santiago Lorenzo, the respective top three names, all advanced to the round of the last eight.

However, there were opening round upsets. Chile’s Andres Martinez, the no.4 seed, lost to Argentina’s Matias Guadeloupe (11-3, 12-10, 5-11, 11-7, 11-7); Peru’s Jhon Loli, the no.6 seed, suffered at the hands of Brazil’s Diogo Silva (7-11, 11-5, 6-11, 11-6, 11-8, 12-14, 11-4). Similarly, Chile’s Jorge Paredes, the no.7 seed, was beaten by Argentina’s Mattias Velarde (11-9, 11-4, 11-9, 7-11, 4-11, 11-9); Peru’s Felipe Duffoo, the no.8 seed, found Lauro Sebold, like Diogo Silva from Brazil, too hot to handle (11-6, 11-7, 10-12, 7-11, 6-11, 11-3, 11-8).

Meanwhile, in the cadet boys’ singles first round matches, the one major casualty was Ecuador’s Diego Piguave; the no.4 seed, he was beaten by Peru’s Adrian Rubinos (11-4, 11-7, 11-7). Otherwise, for the leading names, the opening round was negotiated successfully. Peru’s Carlos Fernandez, the top seed, duly reserved his last eight place, as did the next two names in the order of merit, Brazil’s Henrique Noguti and Argentina’s Tomas Sanchi.

Progress for three of the four leading names in the cadet boys’ singles event; in the counterpart cadet girls’ singles it was progress for all four. Brazil’s Guilia Takahashi and Laura Watanabe duly advanced to the quarter-final round, as did Colombia’s Juliana Lozada and Peru’s Maria Maldonado.
