Success just under one week ago in the Chilean capital city of Santiago; on Friday 5th May at the Seamaster 2017 ITTF Challenge Brazil Open it was defeat for India’s Amalraj Antnony and Soumyajit Ghosh.

They were beaten at the quarter-final stage of the Men’s Doubles event by the combination of Germany’s Patrick Baum and the Slovak Republic’s Thomas Keinath (11-4, 4-11, 11-8, 13-11); the European duo, having in the opening round, ended the hopes of Brazil’s Guilherme Teodoro and Rafael Torino (11-5, 11-6, 10-12, 11-6).

At the semi-final stage, Patrick Baum and Thomas Keinath meet Chile’s Gustavo Gomez and Juan Lamadrid, in the opposite half of the draw it is an all Brazilian affair; Hugo Calderano and Gustavo Tsuboi oppose Eric Jouti and Cazuo Matsumoto.

Gustavo Gomez and Juan Lamadrid reserved their semi-final place courtesy of success against the host nation’s Massao Kohatsu and Danilo Toma (11-5, 13-11, 11-6), whilst Hugo Calderano and Gustavo Tsuboi overcame the partnership comprising Bulgaria’s Philipp Floritz and Romania’s Hunor Szocs (11-9, 12-10, 13-11).

A three-nil win for Hugo Calderano and Gustavo Tsuboi but each game closely contested, it very much the same for Eric Jouti and Cazuo Matsumoto, especially in the two opening games when facing the combination of Frenchman Andrea Landrieu and Chile’s Alajandro Rodriguez. A straight games victory margin was the outcome but the contest, as with their colleagues, was arguably closer than the straight games score-line may suggest (13-11, 13-11, 11-6).

Brazilian interest high in the Men’s Doubles event, it is the very same in the Women’s Doubles competition.

Martina Kohatsu and Caroline Kumahara accounted for colleagues Tamyres Fukase and Daniela Yana (6-11, 11-6, 11-9, 11-2) at the quarter-final stage and now meet the combination formed by Romania’s Bernadette Szocs and Audrey Zarif of France. They booked their semi-final place courtesy of success against the host nation’s Fernanda Kodama and Giulia Takahashi (12-10, 11-6, 11-3).

Meanwhile, in the opposite half of the draw Gui Lin and Bruna Takahashi fly the flag for Brazil.

In the round of the last eight pairs, they overcame compatriots Luana Katsumata and Victoria Ucima (13-11, 11-5, 11-8) and now confront the Chilean pairing of Judith Morales and Paulina Vega, the duo to experience the most severe quarter-final test. They needed the full five games to overcome the host nation’s Beatriz Kimoto and Livia Lima (9-11, 11-5, 11-8, 8-11, 11-7).

The semi-finals of both the Men’s Doubles and Women’s Doubles events are scheduled for Saturday 6th May.
