Ma Lin and Werner Schlager Survive Opening Encounters but Both are Tested

The man who has won the Men’s World Cup title more times than another player and the man who has a special liking for Paris, because that is where he was crowned World Champion, came through their opening matches at the Liebherr Men’s World Cup in Paris on Friday 27th October 2006 but both were given tough examinations.

Ma Lin beat Patrick Chila of France whilst Werner Schlager, overcame Liu Song of Argentina.
Patrick Chila who came so close against Ma Lin
Patrick Chila was beaten by Ma Lin, the three times World Cup winner, 7-11, 11-4, 11-9, 9-11, 9-11, 11-7, 11-6, whilst Werner Schlager overcame Liu Song, the Latin American champion, 11-5, 3-11, 11-7, 9-11, 11-9, 11-4.

Close
It was a disappointment for the home crowd as Patrick Chila came so close to causing a major upset against Ma Lin.

He led by three games to two and was level at 7-all in the sixth game.

The next match in the group, which will be against Liu Song, may well determine the Frenchman’s destiny in the tournament and it will certainly be a tough encounter. Two weeks ago the pair faced each other in the French League and Liu Song won.

Disappointed
"I am very disappointed; I really like this kind of tournament, I know my level is high enough to beat a player of Ma Lin’s caliber”, said Patrick Chila. “I had a big problem with his serve in the last game. I really enjoy playing against Ma Lin, we contested many really great points; now, I will try to concentrate before the next game”.

That’s all he can do and he’ll be seeking revenge against Liu Song.
