Oh Sang Eun Beats Local Hero to Capture Spanish Men’s Singles Crown

Oh Sang Eun crowned Men's Singles champion in Almeria


Korea’s Oh Sang Eun won the Men’s Singles title at the Spanish Open in Almeria on Sunday 10th April 2011 to collect the seventh ITTF Pro Tour Men’s Singles crown of his career.

Furthermore, in so doing thwarted local hopes. In the final he beat Vladimir Samsonov, the no.1 seed; born and bred in Belarus, but now resident in Granada, a three hour drive from Almeria.

Oh Sang Eun, the no.4 seed, comnined a stylish display of attacking excellence with clear determination, to overcome Vladimir Samsonov in six games. He won 11-9, 17-15, 5-11, 11-6, 12-10.

Concentration at the UNOSDP course

Florida in the United States of America was the home for most recent Youth Leadership Camp organised by the United Nations Sport for Development and Peace (UNOSDP); the IMG Academy in the City of Bradenton being the venue.

The tenth is the series which started in Doha, Qatar in January 2012, the course was held from Sunday 8th to Friday 20th June.

Once again table tennis was on the schedule with Ramon Ortega Montes, the Development Officer of the Latin American Table Tennis Union and Leandro Olvech, the Director of Development for the International Table Tennis Federation, being the experts on duty.

Choose the table on which you prefer to play; if that was possible at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, Guyana’s Paul David would undoubtedly choose table no.7.

Playing on that table he secured first place in his group in the Men’s Singles event finishing ahead of Vanuatu’s Yoshua Shing and Papua New Guinea’s Geoffrey Loi.

One day later, on Wednesday 30th July, in the Mixed Doubles event, in partnership with Trenace Lowe, after recording a close first round win over Northern Ireland’s Peter Graham and Emma Ludlow on table no.2 (8-11, 11-8, 3-11, 11-7, 11-7); the duo next played on table no.7 to perform.

A tourist destination and a region which has seen table tennis grow and flourish in recent times; the Atlantic island of Madeira once again is the home for an ITTF Junior Circuit tournament.

Staged in the capital of the island, the Funchal Junior and Cadet Open commences on Wednesday 3rd September and concludes on Saturday 6th September 2014.

Home for the ITTF Cadet Challenge and ITTF Junior Circuit Finals in 2004, Madeira is very much at the heart of sport; both Marcos Freitas and the celebrated footballer, Cristiano Ronaldo, hail from the island.

Cazuo Matsumoto celebrates the moment of victory

Mexico’s Marcos Madrid caused an upset, Puerto Rico’s Adriana Diaz threatened to cause the upset but at the end of the day it was Brazil who stood tall.

Cazuo Matsumoto and Caroline Kumahara won the respective Men’s Singles and Women’s Singles titles at the ITTF-Latin America Cup in Asuncion, Paraguay on Sunday 8th June.

At the final hurdle Cazuo Matsumoto, the no.2 seed, beat Marcos Madrid, the no.4 seed (13-15, 11-7, 14-12, 11-7, 11-9), after the Mexican had caused a semi-final upset by overcoming Cazuo Matsumoto’s compatriot, Gustavo Tsuboi, the no.1 seed (8-11, 11-4, 11-8, 11-4, 11-7).

Staged from Monday 28th April to Monday 5th May, the ZEN-NOH 2014 World Team Championships were officially the most followed World Championships in history.

Across 22 television networks throughout the globe there were 475 combined hours of coverage, including an impressive 50 hours just on China Central Television (CCTV).

The 50 hours on CCTV were watched by a combined total of 188 million people and the women's final had an average viewership of 11.3 million, making it the second most watched sporting programme, not taking into account the Winter Olympics, in China in 2014.

Han Ying delighted in Incheon with her technically perfect defensive skills

China’s Xu Xin and Germany’s Han Ying emerged as the winners of the respective Men’s Singles and Women’s Singles events at the GAC Group 2014 ITTF World Tour Korea Open in Incheon on the afternoon of Sunday 15th June.

The success recorded by Xu Xin was as predicted, he was the no.1 seed and he was playing in no less than his 14th ITTF World Tour Men’s Singles final; conversely Han Ying, the no.7 seed in the Women’s Singles event was competing in her first such final.

En route both displayed their skills to the full; their performances and that of several other leading players on duty in Incheon can be viewed in DHS Top 10 - 2014 Korea Open .
