Oh Sang Eun Beats Local Hero to Capture Spanish Men’s Singles Crown

Oh Sang Eun crowned Men's Singles champion in Almeria


Korea’s Oh Sang Eun won the Men’s Singles title at the Spanish Open in Almeria on Sunday 10th April 2011 to collect the seventh ITTF Pro Tour Men’s Singles crown of his career.

Furthermore, in so doing thwarted local hopes. In the final he beat Vladimir Samsonov, the no.1 seed; born and bred in Belarus, but now resident in Granada, a three hour drive from Almeria.

Oh Sang Eun, the no.4 seed, comnined a stylish display of attacking excellence with clear determination, to overcome Vladimir Samsonov in six games. He won 11-9, 17-15, 5-11, 11-6, 12-10.

Bronze medallist in the Boys’ Singles event at the recent ITTF Cadet Challenge in Bridgetown, Barbados; Romania’s Cristian Pletea won the Cadet Boys’ Singles title at the 2014 Hungarian Junior and Cadet Open in Szombathely on Sunday 9th November.

In the final he accounted for Japan’s Yu Kayama, the no.5 seed (11-8, 11-7, 11-3).

An impressive result and the Romanian was equally impressive en route. At the semi-final stage he beat Lithuania's Medardas Stankevicius, the no.10 seed (7-11, 11-8, 11-9, 11-5), having in the round of the last eight, accounted for Hungary’s Csaba Andras (12-14, 11-8, 11-5, 11-6).

Juan Lamadrid overcame Livan Martinez to win his first ever ITTF Junior Circuit Boys' Singles title

Runner up just under two months ago in mid –June in the Colombian city of Medellin, Chile’s Juan Lamadrid won the Junior Boys’ Singles title at the Guatemala Junior and Cadet Open on Saturday 9th August.

In Medellin, he had let the opportunity of his first ever ITTF Junior Circuit Boys’ Singles title slip from his hands; after causing a semi-final upset by beating Argentina’s Fermin Tenti, the top seed, he made a lightning start in the final.

He won the first three games against Brazil’s Massao Kohatsu, only to lose the next three and suffer the anguish of defeat.

Andy Pereira, the Men's Singles winner at the Central American and Carinnean Games

Cuba’s Andy Pereira and the host nation’s Yadira Silva won the respective Men’s Singles and Women’s Singles titles at the Central American and Caribbean Games in the Mexican town of Xalapa on Thursday 20th November, to bring to a conclusion six days of action in the Omega Stadium.

Not seeded owing to an absence from international competition, Andy Pereira ended Puerto Rican hopes.

At the semi-final stage he accounted for Daniel Gonzalez, the no.2 seed (11-4, 11-3, 11-5, 11-7), before in the final overcoming Brian Afanador, the no.4 seed (11-5, 11-4, 9-11, 12-10, 5-11, 13-11).

Ding Ning celebrates, Singapore success repeated

Winner of the Women’s World Cup in Singapore in 2011, the only other occasion that she has competed in the prestigious annual tournament, China’s Ding Ning repeated the feat in the Austrian city of Linz on the early evening of Sunday 19th October.

In Singapore, at the final hurdle, she had beaten colleague, Li Xiaoxia in the final in five games (11-9, 11-5, 7-11, 14-12, 11-9); in Linz she prevailed in four straight game(11-7, 11-9, 13-11, 11-5).

Third place went to Japan’s Kasumi Ishikawa; she overcame Hungary’s Georgina Pota in a contest that went the full seven match distance (11-9, 8-11, 6-11, 11-3,7-11, 11-9, 11-4) to secure her best ever finish in a Women’s World Cup one her third appearance.

Huang Yu-Chiao, consecutive Junior Girls' Singles titles won in Central America

Gold medallists in Guatemala; one week later, on Friday 15th August, Chile’s Juan Lamadrid and Chinese Taipei’s Huang Yu-Chiao repeated the feat at the El Salvador Junior and Cadet Open.

In the neighbouring Central American country’s principal city of San Salvador, Juan Lamadrid won the Junior Boys’ Singles title, Huang Yu-Chiao, donned the counterpart Junior Girls’ Singles crown.
