Situated in the Caribbean and in 2005 the host for the ITTF Cadet Challenge and World junior Circuit Finals, the Dominican Republic is the home for an ITTF/PTT Level One Coach Education Course which commenced on Saturday 31st October and will conclude on Thursday 5th November 2009.
Under the auspices of the ITTF Development Programme, the course is being directed by El Savador's Carlos Esnard, the Technical Director of the Latin American Table Tennis Union. Home for the activities is the National Training Centre in Barranquita.
A total of 26 students have enrolled on the course of whom six are women.
Representation Ten provinces – Santo Domingo, San Juan de la Maguana, Monte Plata, Duarte, Salcedo, Espaillat, La Vega, Valverde, Cotuí and Santiago – have sent coaches to attend the course.
However, not only have coaches from ten provinces in the Dominican Republic enrolled but there are representatives from New York, a city with which the Dominican Republic has close links, and Colombia.
Jose Ortiz, who is Secretary General of the Dominican Sport Union of New York, and the Chief Executive of the Criollo Table Tennis Club in that city, is present as is Carlos Alberto Ruiz from Colombia.
Opening Ceremony Juan Vila, the President of the Dominican Table Tennis Federation, addressed the group at the start of the course accompanied by Pichardo Marks, Executive Director of the Sport Union of Santiago.
In addition, Julia Lora de Hieronimus and Daniel Landrón, members of the Executive Committee of the Dominican Republic Table Tennis Federation were present at the Opening Ceremony.
The introductions over, Carlos Esnard detailed the five day programme and work began.
