PRESIDENT'S FORUM
Future of World Championships
30 May 2007
Dear Carl,

You are absolutely right. For the top players they play a lot of matches at the World Individual Championships, but for the lower ranked players they get very few matches. We will rethink our Championships and I will propose to introduce a "Ranking Tournament" for the players that lose in the group play and possibly the first round losers.
We used to have such an event but them it disappeared.
It would be a very good idea to re-introduce it.

If you have any other ideas, then please let me know.

Adham Sharara
ITTF President

Adham:

I hope you and your family are doing well.

Having seen the results of the recent World Championships, I wanted to ask again whether there are any plans to improve the format so that less-strong players can have more than a handful of matches.  As things stand, it seems to me that support is falling within the US association for sending full teams to these tournaments for that reason.

Best regards,

Yes, the system can be improved and will be improved.

Dear Mr. Sharara:

It has been some years (more than I wish to recall) since we have seen one another.  I hope all is well with you and your family.

My question concerns the recent World Team Championship.  I noticed that lower division teams seemed to play very few matches.  For example, the mens' teams from the United States and Canada played only five team matches in five days, plus a playoff round.  As well, each team match was only best of five individual matches.  This small opportunity for play seemed like a wasted opportunity for the sport.  More play would have permitted more athletes to gain international experience, would have
promoted more fellowship between athletes of different countries, and would have provided more useful information for international ratings.

While recognizing that the details of such an event are presumably discussed and negotiated among many federations and officials, I was wondering if you would agree that this format could be improved, and perhaps suggest whether we may see more play at the world team championships in the future.

Best regards,
