President responds to Mr. HArtmann about Umpires
Oct 16 2002
Dear Mr. Reinhold,

Thank you very much for your input and comments regarding the new
service rule and table tennis in general which were forwarded to me
by Mr. Aly Salam.
Please let me remind you that a table tennis player is both a SERVER
and a RECEIVER. The rule is not made against Servers in favour of
Receivers, since that is one and the same. The rule is made to
improve our sport.

I do not criticize ALL Umpires, but I surely criticize some umpires.
Unfortunately some umpires, and I saw myself, do not implement our
rules correctly. This may be due to a fault on our part (ITTF and
National Associations) over the years of not properly educating and
training all umpires at the same standards. We will try our best to
improve in this area and we look forward to the full co-operation of
all umpires in implementing our rules correctly and according to the
decisions made by the AGM.

I thank you again for your input and hope to see you at the German
Open in Magdeburg.

Adham Sharara

ITTF President

Dear Mr. Aly Salam,

what kind of table tennis do we practize in future?
Promotion free, clothing multicolored and playing like barbarians? So
it is, seen the last view years in development of our sport. Table
tennis is artistic, show, fitness and cleverness. Each sports will be able to be the best. See formula 1(M.Schumacher), tennis (Williams sisters). Look at the girls in tennis sport ! Year by year e.g. St.Graf dominated the tennis circus. Did anyone demand a handicap for her service ? Why did we ? Why do we need more obstructions for the
service? A good service should be

1. throwing the ball up to min. 30 cm

2. behind the base line

3. above the table

Not more acts are needed for a service in table tennis. Servers must be free to show creative moments and receivers have to perfect their return (not to cry for help).

It is not necessary to see the ball at all times and the rules shouldn't be the stirrup of the loosers. Only attractive events/shows will be noticed by media institutions. Table tennis is entertainment pure and so it should be treat as attraction and not becoming dead before it is born.

So it is not Mr. Sharara's job to criticize all umpires.
He has to forward table tennis and not to hide it.
Do we want to be serious by the international sports family ?
Not with the last decisions and their presentations !!
Yes, keep it simple and we become professionals.

Best regards,

Reinhold Hartmann, ISR
