COMMENTS FROM PLAYERS AT THE 1997 EUROPE TOP 12 IN EINDHOVEN:
Marie Svensson (Sweden)
`She never gives up, always fighting to the top point whether or not
the conditions were good; a splendid career, an example for the
youngsters.'
Asa Svensson (Sweden)
`A very strong person, always motivated till the end, she showed many
players the way to be professional and placed great importance on
fitness. Personally, I'm relieved, I lost to her too many times!'
Olga Nemes (Germany)
`Many years ago we were adversaries, later we played in the same team
at Dülmen, now we are friends, table tennis is our life.'
Vivien Ellö (Hungary)
`We'll all miss her, especially the top European players for she was
always good against the Asian stars, her fighting spirit has always
been an example for me to follow.'
Jie Schöpp (Germany)
`It is only seldom that you see players like Vriesekoop, playing for
such a long time at such a high level in a difficult sport, it is a
fantastic achievement. In many ways it's a good decision, it gives
younger players a chance.'
Krisztina Toth (Hungary)
`Bettine has shown us that it is possible to play for two decades at
the same high level, she was good against all styles of play.'
Otilia Badescu (Romania)
`A splendid career, always hard working. We are losing one of our
best European players but I am sure a new generation will emerge.'
Mirjam Hooman (Netherlands)
`A fantastic player, a tremendous sportswoman, I am envious of such a
career.'
Elena Timina & Irina Palina (Russia)
`We are losing a brilliant player, a fantastic sportswoman, we wish
her all the best for the future and a new career. She is dreaming of
a new family and being a mother...another player for our sport?'
Lisa Lomas (England)
`It will be strange to see Vriesekoop as a spectator. She was a great
player for so many years; hopefully, she will find a new challenge. I
lost every match against her and now I cannot gain revenge'
Jill Parker (England)
'An exceptionally good player for many years. The name and the career
of Bettine Vriesekoop will never be forgotten, she finishes after
more than twenty years and she finishes at the top. All the best
Bettine.'
