ITTF President Adham Sharara (L)
accepts Sydney 2000 Olympics torch
donated by Oceania TTA President Patrick Gillmann

Sydney Olympic Torch !

The year 2010 ended with a wonderful gift for the ITTF Museum, donated by Oceania TTA President Patrick Gillmann. 'The torch was used in the relay around the Pacific Islands, finishing in Palau before the Sydney Olympic Games. The last relay in Palau was run by the late Jemmy Watanabe, past president of the Palau Table Tennis Association.'
In accepting this historic torch Adham observed: 'The relay continues, from Oceania to Bratislava, then on to Lausanne, where it will join the other Olympic torches in the ITTF Museum.' ITTF Executive Director Jordi Serra relayed the torch to the Museum - the final relay.
Now the Museum needs only the torches from Barcelona 1992 and Atlanta 1996 to complete the series, which began with Seoul 1988, when Table Tennis first appeared in the Olympic Games. On behalf of the international Table Tennis community we thank Patrick for this extraordinary donation, which helps the Museum to preserve the great memories of the Sydney Olympics experience. Bravo Patrick !

Marty Reisman, portrait in oils
by David Beynon Pena
Marty Reisman, by David Beynon Pena

Legendary Marty Reisman (USA) arrived at the ITTF Museum, in the form of an original full-length portait in oils by David Beynon Pena of New York. The painting, imposing at over 1.5 meters tall and the first original oil painting in the ITTF Museum, really captures the essence of the charismatic ambassador of the hardbat style of Table Tennis. Still slim and trim at 80 years young, with a precise, consistent attack, Marty is featured in the BBC's Ping Pong Planet, in countless magazine articles and in many videos. His autobiography The Money Player was published in 1974, now a scarce collectors' item.

The colorful painting has an interesting symbolic position in our Classic Era room, just next to the entrance to the Age of Technology room. As is well known through his unique form of Ping Pong Diplomacy, Marty steadfastly refuses to embrace the new technology sponge rackets, still an outspoken advocate of the classical style using hardbat.

The artist David Beynon Pena is renowned and highly sought after for his portraiture. We thank everyone involved in making this donation happen, and congratulate David for his great creation.

August 2010:
