Managing the FUTURE

The ITTF World Cadet Challenge is like no other ITTF event changing the landscape of Junior and Youth Table Tennis around the world. Just ask six continental WCC managers working around the clock to gather the best possible teams for the 2005 edition coming up in Santo Domingo, DOM Rep 23-31 October.
And yes, it is busy times for the managers, dealing with everything from team preparations to clothing and VISA issues. Luckily enough, not only for the ITTF, but also for all involved parties , it’s a both competent and experienced group of people taking on the tasks.

With the Executive Director of the Canadian Association Mr. Tony Kiesenhofer managing the North American team, few things can go wrong. Composed of equal number of athletes from the USA and Canada the North American team seems to be ready for an upset or two. Best chance for a top finish is the right handed Canadian SHEN Quiang, making his second WCC appearance in the Cadet Boys singles . SHEN finished ninth overall in Madeira 2004.

In the host continent optimism runs high.
Fueled by recent comments from the dynamic President of the ULTM (Latin American Table Tennis Union) Mr. Miguel Delgado the Latin Americans are ready to take on anyone in the world.

“Just give us a few years and we will be ready to challenge even bigger continents like Asia and Europe. The talent level in Latin America is very high” Delgado said during the ITTF WJC event in El Salvador earlier in August.

Two young talents from CHILE are causing all kinds of buzz where ever they perform. One of them – Felipe OLIVARES, born in 1992 is included in the LA team and will make an interesting start in Santo Domingo.
Another fine Latin American talent – Juan VILA , this time dressing for the proud national team of DOM REPUBLIC , will make his second start in the ITTF WCC and should stand good chances to improve on last years performance .

The European Team always comes well prepared. This time the energetic team manager Ms Zita PIDL is gathering her team in Paris for some three days of practice and team bonding prior to take off. Composed of athletes from seven associations the Europeans will once again come together under the experienced coaching duo of Jarek KOLODZIEJCZYK, POL (third event in a row) and Gundars RUSIS LTV. Insteresting start is announced for the promsing Ukrainan Margaryta PESOTSKA , born 1991 in Cadet girls.

Africa is sending their best team ever to the ITTF WCC. Especially the African Cadet Boys team this time looks like a real contender and with the team manager Khaled El SAHLY from Egypt putting strong empasis on preparation the Africans will come to play for real. With more than three weeks of practice and competition in China during the month of August the team will re-gather for the final preparation in Barcelona before leaving for the DOM Republic and this years Cadet showdown.

Steve YOGO from Congo Brazzaville (third start in the WCC) will anchor the boys team together with Mohammed Tarek AL SOBKY from EGYPT. But maybe the most interesting player for the moment is TOGO;s talent Komi AGBETOGLO , the recent winner of the Taiyuan WJC mini cadet event in China .

Managing Team Oceania is the hard working Australian Steve DAINTON.
In between his normal duties as the ITTF Direcotr of the ITTF office in Shanghai and development work in Oceania , Steve is travelling to DOM Republic with athletes from four countries – New Zealand , Australia , Vanatu and New Caledonia.

Best hope ? Hard to say , but for a while now there has been positive vibrations surrounding the name Robert FRANK. The right-handed Aussie , last played a crucial role in the hard fought victory over archrivals New Zealand in the ITTF World Junior qualifcation in Fiji and had, despite his age, a good showing already in the 2004 World Juniorf Championships in Kobe, Japan.

Both the invited National teams – England (Cadet boys) and Japan (Cadet girls) are entering their best player for Santo Domingo. Again we have some well experienced people pulling the strings. YOKOTA Sachiko , JPN is taking care of buisness , not only for Japan , but also for the Asian team and Mr Steen Kyst HANSEN, Technical manager of the English Table Tennis Association is preparing the defending European Champions to make an impact also on the world cadet scene.

”We definetly have a chance to win the competition and thats what we are going after. Both our aces Paul DRINKHALL and Darius KNIGHT had a good summer in all aspects” HANSEN said recently.

Team ASIA will as always be a treat for Table Tennis fans competing with several young talents. Noticables are in the boys team well known Kenta MATSUDAIRA joining up with two brilliant young Koreans – JUNG Young Sik and KIM Meon Seok.

Singapore is represented for the first time in the ITTF WCC sending the defensive player and Asian Cadet Girl singles Champion SIM Kai Xin Zeena into action.

The ITTF World Cadet Challenge will begin in Santo Domingo, DOMINICAN REPUBLIC Sunday 23 October.
