Withheld Prize Money, Allocated to Fair Play Award

The prize money withheld from China’s Zhang Jike at the LIEBHERR 2014 Men's World Cup will go towards promoting fair play in table tennis.

Following his quite sensational victory over Ma Long in the final in Düsseldorf on Sunday 26th October, Zhang Jike damaged court surrounds in his somewhat over exuberant celebration.

The decision of the jury was to withhold the $45,000 prize money.....

The records show that Zhang Jike beat Ma Long to win the Liebherr 2014 Men’s World Cup in Düsseldorf on Sunday 26th October and in so doing collected the title for the second time in his career.

No doubt the celebration when matters concluded will remain poignant in the memory and to some extent overshadows what was an absolutely outstanding final.

Title Secured in Dramatic Final but Zhang Jike Pays Price of Success

The winner in Paris three years earlier, Zhang Jike regained the Liebherr Men’s World Cup title in the ISS Dome in the German city of Düsseldorf on Sunday 26th October. He clinched gold in one of the most dramatic finals ever witnessed since the tournament was first staged in 1980.

Occupying the second seeded position in the competition, he beat Chinese National Team colleague and top seed, Ma Long in scintillating final to arrest the title.

Zhang Jike, the master of the big occasion won in seven games (8-11, 11-4, 13-11, 7-11, 2-11, 11-5, 12-10) and celebrated in a manner for which with good grace he later apologised.

The top two seeds, China’s Ma Long and Zhang Jike emerged successful at the semi-final stage of the Liebherr 2014 Men’s World Cup in the German city of Düsseldorf on the morning of Sunday 26th October.

Impressively,Ma Long, the no.1 seed, accounted for Japan’s Jun Mizutani, the no.4 seed (11-9, 11-4, 11-6, 11-7), before Zhang Jike, the no.2 seed, prevailed in a much closer encounter.

He overcame the host nation’s Timo Boll, the no.6 seed, in a full distance seven games encounter (11-7, 5-11, 11-8, 16-14, 6-11, 6-11, 11-6).....

Journey’s End for Quadri Aruna but Defeat with Honour

All good things come to an end; eventually for Nigeria’s Quadri Aruna his adventures at the Liebherr Men’s World Cup in the Germany city of Düsseldorf terminated but it took the most successful player on planet earth to end his voyage of discovery.

The no.17 seed, he was beaten by China’s Zhang Jike, the no.2 seed, the reigning Olympic and World champion.

Defeat but it was defeat with honour for the 26 year old African; he did not bid farewell without a whimper; he extended the 2011 champion to six games (6-11, 11-7, 11-4, 11-7, 8-11, 11-8).....

Again, Quarter-Final Stumbling Block for Chuang Chih-Yuan

The winner over Chinese Taipei’s Chuang Chih-Yuan at the quarter-final stage of proceedings at the GAC Honda Asian Cup in Wuhan earlier in the year in March; Japan’s Jun Mizutani repeated his success in the same round at the Liebherr 2014 World Cup in Düsseldorf.

On the evening of Saturday 25th October, occupying the no.4 seeded position in the draw, he beat Chiang Chih-Yuan, the no.5 seed, in five games (5-11, 13-11, 11-6, 11-6, 15-13) to book his place in the semi-final stage of proceedings for the third time in his career.

He reached the penultimate round in Magdeburg in 2010 and one year later in Paris.....

Run Continues, Tang Peng Next to Fall, Quadri Aruna Reaches Goal

The lowest seeded player in his group and with the stated goal of reaching the quarter- finals being his avowed aim; against all expectations Nigeria’s Quadri Aruna has progressed to the round of the last eight at the Liebherr 2014 Men’s World Cup in Düsseldorf.

Occupying the no.17 seeded position in the draw, he beat Japan’s Kenta Matsudaira, the no.12 seed (11-3, 7-11, 11-6, 5-11, 11-2, 13-11) and Russia’s Alexander Shibaev, the no.14 seed (11-6, 11-7, 11-4, 11-8) on the opening day of play to secure first place in his group.

On the second day, Saturday 25th October, he continued his unprecedented run of form.....
