England Success Continues, Spanish Gold Follows Tokyo Title

Good times for England; at the recently completed ZEN-NOH 2014 World Team Championships in Tokyo, the outfit formed by Liam Pitchford, Paul Drinkhall, Danny Reed and Sam Walker won the Men’s Division One title and thus gained promotion to the Championship Division.

One week later on Sunday 11th May, there was more success for England.

Tom Jarvis emerged as the winner of the Cadet Boys’ Singles title at the 2014 Spanish Junior and Cadet Open in Platja d’Aro.....

Unbeaten Throughout, Full House for Chiu Ssu-Hua in Platja d’Aro

Two days earlier gold in the Junior Girls’ Singles event and with Huang Yu-Wen the same colour medal in the Junior Girls’ Doubles competition, Chiu Ssu-Hua completed a hat-trick of titles at the 2014 Spanish Junior and Cadet Open in Platja d’Aro on Saturday 10th May.

Once again lining up alongside Chinese Taipei colleague, Huang Yu-Wen, and with Russia’s Ekaterina Chernyavskaya completing the trio, the top prize was secured in the Junior Girls’ Team competition with Chiu Ssu-Hua leading by example.

She remained unbeaten throughout the whole event and thus completed the tournament with an unblemished record; she did not lose a single match at any stage of the proceedings.....

Earlier Adversaries Combine to Secure Title with New Found Friend

Finalists in the Junior Boys’ Singles event earlier in the week, when Liao Cheng-Ting had beaten Yang Heng-Wei to secure gold; on Saturday 10th May, the two Chinese Taipei teenagers joined forces with Ukraine’s Kyrylo Samokysh to secure the Junior Boys’ Team crown at the Spanish Junior and Cadet Open in Platja d’Aro.

At the final hurdle they beat the Turkish trio of Ibrahim Gunduz, Ozgun Ozturk and Ziver Gunduz to reserve the top step of the medal podium.

Yang Heng-Wei beat Ibrahim Gunduz (14-12, 8-11, 11-5, 6-11, 11-6), Lia Cheng-Ting overcame Ozgun Ozturk (11-3, 4-11, 11-7, 11-9) with Kyrylo Samokysh concluding matters by defeating Ziver Gunduz (11-7, 11-7, 6-11, 11-7).....

World Hopes Team Member Shines as Team Events Commence in Platja d’Aro

A member of the World Hopes Team in 2012, Brazil’s 14 year old Bruna Takahashi was the player to shine in the first stage of the Junior Girls’ Team event at the 2014 Spanish Junior and Cadet Open in Platj d’Aro on Friday 9th May.

Lining up alongside compatriot Leticia Nakada and Switzerland’s Camile-Chloe Linke; Bruna Takahashi remained unbeaten throughout the day as she guided her team to a surprise first place in their group.

They started their campaign with a three-matches to nil win over the Turkish trio of Ipek Karahan, Damla Uzel and Kubra Tan before causing a major upset; they overcame the third seeded Italian trio of Bianca Bracco, Veronica Mosconi and Giorgia Piccolin by three matches to two.....

Successful Day for Top Seeds but Next in Line Experience First Stage Problems

Top place for the top seeds but for the remaining four leading outfits in the first stage of the Junior Boys’ Team event at the 2014 Spanish Junior and Cadet Open in Platja d’Aro on Friday 9th May, there were defeats.

Five groups in the opening phase of proceedings, the combination of Chinese Taipei’s Liao Cheng-Ting and Yang Heng-Wei in partnership with Ukraine’s Kyrylo Samokysh duly finished in first place in their group.

However, for the next in line, the outcome was second place; the consolation being that the teams finishing in first and second places in each group, progressed to the main draw. Thus ambitions of a podium finish remained alive.....

Three Bronze, Three Silver, Finally Gold for Liao Cheng-Ting

So near yet so far on previous occasions, on Thursday 8th May Liao Cheng-Ting eventually secured the top step of the medal podium at an ITTF Junior Circuit tournament.

The top seed he won the Junior Boys’ Singles event at the Spanish Junior Open in Platja d’Aro beating colleague, Yang Heng-Wei the second seed, in all Chinese Taipei final.

Liao Cheng-Ting succeeded in a contest that went the full seven games distance (6-11, 13-11, 11-5, 7-11, 11-8, 4-11, 11-9).....

Command Performance, Chiu Ssu-Hua Secures Gold Without Loss of Single Game

Successful earlier in the year at the Youth Olympic Games World Qualification Tournament in the Portuguese city of Vilanova de Gaia; Chinese Taipei’s Chiu Ssu-Hua won the Junior Girls’ Singles title at the 2014 Spanish Junior and Cadet Open in Platja d’Aro on Thursday 8th May.

Occupying the top seeded position in the competition, she secured gold in the most emphatic manner possible.

No player was able to cope with her close to the table blocking style of play, the combination racket of long pimples on the backhand and reversed rubber on the forehand mesmerised her opponents.....
